Is My Country Still “‘Tis Of Thee”?
Grand Rants ^ | 03-17-2010 | Gerry Ashley

I read of the optimism today of Democrats who predict a healthcare reform “victory” for America. Did we really elect people this ignorant? Or are they knowing accomplices in the attempted overthrow of our healthcare industry and taking a huge step into added control of every aspect of our lives?

As I pondered the above,... I imagined the words of Samuel Francis Smith...

I recalled how we used to sing it with such pride as children in a far better era, long passed:

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of Liberty,
Of thee, I sing!
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside let freedom ring!

As I let the song play in my head, it dawned on me: This, ladies and gentlemen, WAS America...

How many of us have faced the possibility that we can no longer say we are proud of our country?

I can remember growing up, I constantly heard "we live in the greatest country, etc". Used to hear this a little in the 90s, and one time only in the 2000s.

Don't think anyone would say that today with a straight face.

The United States of America has certainly gone to hell since Reagan.

If Michelle can say she’s proud, I will be ashamed.

Despite the depradations of the current administration, I am still proud to be an American. I think the majority of our citizenry is composed of decent, hardworking people. But I fear for the nation my children will inherit if the present course continues.

I wouldn’t.
I wish Medved would stop using the “greatest nation on God’s green earth” tagline. Its embarrassing. Closer to the truth would be this tagline: “The once greatest nation on God’s green earth - time to be great again.”

Obama’s father died in Kenya. And don’t get him started on Pilgrims. The Jerimiah Wright in him will flair up like his nostrils.

Forget it. We are just about converted to a taxed poor people and liberty is almost a joke. When the health bill passes it will be the nail in our coffin. Americans cannot support their families, the huge tax burden, and still remain free. Your liberty is in direct portion to the taxes, thousands of fees, and penalties we pay. Think about that. As our Government gets more corrupt and our leaders get rich, we get poorer. Power and greed.

Justice has been replaced by Just Us. Witness current events.

I watched a Larry Burkett video several years ago and he pointed out that even Christians have been willing to trade a little bit of freedom for a little bit of security. Over time, you continue to lose more and more freedom for perceived security. My family has qualified for certain forms of welfare for eight of the last 11 years and we probably do again...we haven't taken it, due in large part to our agreement with the above statement. What surprises me is just how many conservatives will take assistance through WIC, saying it's a food program, not welfare. Or use MA just because they qualify and then they don't have to cover any deductible when they have a baby.

My husband's brother and his wife built a fairly large home on 5 acres three years ago (financed partly with a gift from her parents), have very nice clothes, newer cars and new furniture throughout the house. Yet, they have been enrolled in WIC since conceiving their second child. It doesn't even cross their minds that this is other people's money. They are politically conservative and strong Christians, the mindset of people has changed. There is no pride in self-sufficiency, no shame in taking welfare.
