Okay, the historical St. Patrick from what I understand was actually a Gallo-Roman which means he was more Italian than Irish IIRC, the historical Patrick was a Romanised Briton (British Celtic).
I've heard he was also a Quartodecimanian, for whatever that's worth.

If you read Bede, the Romanists had a problem with the Celtic Churches celibration of Easter, among other things. This was one of the reasons given for Henry II to invade Ireland and bring them into conformity.
