MSNBC's Chris Matthews was on a roll yesterday while discussing the signing of the health care bill when he said the Washington Post "used to be a liberal paper" and that it was now "hard to read ideologically" as Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart referred to the paper as "independent".
Matthews' statements will probably come as a surprise to post publisher Katharine Weymouth who has kept the paper firmly on the liberal track that her late grandmother Katharine Graham established so long ago.
As for Capehart's contention that the paper was independent I don't even think that Post Chairman Donald Graham believes that.

I think Capehart meant the WaPo was “Independent” of morals, ethics and journalistic standards.

Not that it’s saying much, but the Washington Post actually blows away the New York Times when it comes to integrity and professionalism.
