The tea party is an existential threat to the left

The tea party is an existential threat to the left not just in the USA but also in the rest of the world. The basic Narative that the left has used effectively for about one hundred years has been that a big government is necessary to protect the people from the caprious actions of large corporations. The tea party destroys this narative and undermines the very rational the left uses to justify it's actions! Afterall if the people need protecting why are they protesting the very government that protects them . As result they have been forced to go off message . They are now attacking the very people they claim to want to protect. There new message is that people need a big government to protect them from themselves because they are too stupid or evil to know what is good for them . This is a message that only appeals to their base and dooms them to losing elections for the foreseeable future!

Sorta.

There have been those who believe in the power of a strong all-powerful central government forever. Mostly academics and elites who hold lifelong beliefs that, to paraphrase Orwell, “some animals were created more equal than others”. Namely, themselves.

I don’t see the Tea Party causing these people to retreat or change these strong views. However it can, and hopefully WILL, provide an example of a viable alternative for the vast majority of people - such as those that, in the absence of a good alternative, moved to the Obama side in the last election. (The hopey-changey crowd).

Only about 15% of Americans identify with the looney left. We’ll be fine even if we can’t flip any of them, as long as we get the independents and conservative-leaning Democrats.

The libs are sure having trouble motivating their base. That no doubt scares them as much or more than the Tea Party movement.

Oh Goodie! Don’t let up people! And don’t worry about kicking them while they’re down - they earned it, and most certainly they would kick us if we were down.

True dat.

The Car/SUV/Truck/Mommyvan/etc. has replaced the horse as the embodiment of freedom of personal of movement.

That the gov't seeks to restrict freedom of movement , the people will create great resistance.

Maybe the left-leaning youth will wake up when dear leader attacks the wealthy makers of iPad. Large corporations are evil afterall...

And don’t worry about kicking them while they’re down...

I think that half the reason we're where we are is because of Trent Lott's "power sharing" gambit. I disassociated myself from the Republican Party at that time. If you get these bastards down again, drive a stake through their black hearts.
