Here is video of GOP Rep. Steve King speaking on the House Floor today in opposition to the H.R. 2499 which is designed to move Puerto Rico toward statehood.
King pointed out the problem that English is treated as a "second language" in Puerto Rico. King said there needs to be a process of education in Puerto Rico whereby they learn English, which could provide a way for them to be unified to the rest of America with a common language.
The House approved the bill, which provides a two-step process by which Puerto Ricans can vote to say they want to become a state. However, the U.S. Congress would still have to vote to accept Puerto Rico as the 51st state should they choose statehood.

The language is the least of the problems with PR statehood.
Culturally, they have much more in common with Venezuela, than they do the US. Admittance of PR into the US with full statehood would be an epic fail. In fact, we should be well into the process of cutting them loose, than helping them aboard.
