Arlen Specter in PA Debate Demands Apology from Joe Sestak for Calling Him a "Liar" - Video 5/1/10

Here is video of a contentious exchange between Sen. Arlen Specter and his Democrat Primary opponent in the Pennsylvania Senate Race - Rep. Joe Sestak. The two appeared in a debate together on May 1, 2010.

Specter demands an apology from Sestak for calling him a "liar." Specter said he has stated "facts" about Sestak's military service record when he has pointed out that Sestak was "relieved of duty" for the kind of "climate" he created under his command.

Strangely, Sestak appeared to stick to a script in his immediate response to Sestak, and really did not address Specter's demand for an apology.

You could tell the candidates had a list of the questions beforehand. Sestak was concentrating so hard on his script he probably never heard Specter.

It’s always funny to hear a scumbag like Hollerin’ Sphincter take an air of righteous indignation...especially against another leftist scumbag.

Double-down, Joe - call him a “damned liar”! It’s the truth.

They are both right! Specter about Sestak, and Sestak about Specter — it’s a win-win!

I hope the Republican candidate in the general election race is taking notes.

Republicans simply do not fight with the weapons and means they have available, apparently preferring to remain “gentlemanly”.

See where that got George W. Bush. (Erstwhile supporter of Arlen Specter for re-election in 2004)

Arlen, you have, justly or unjustly, assured your old-age security. Go home and enjoy it.

Nothing strange about it at all - it's just debating 101. A common trick for an opponent is to finish his time period with a question or accusation directed at you. The hope is you will so focus on his question or accusation that it will take you away from your prepared argument. You deal with this tactic by not taking the bait or it you do, use the response as a segway into your argument and incorporate it into your prepared argument. Don't let the other side take you out of your game.

Nah, let's keep him around a little while longer before sending him home. He's doing a great of slinging mud at Sestak and can only help Toomey's chances.

His walk of shame is coming, but let's keep him around at least until the Dem primary is decided.

I understand what you are saying, and for a run-of-the-mill attack, I would agree. But this was too “in your face” for Sestak to just ignore. It made him look weak, and it allowed Specter to pile on with, “Notice Congressman Sestak does not deal with the issue of calling me a liar...”

Watched part of this. Sestak is every bit the liar Specter is...maybe even more. Only difference is that Specter was talking about something personal in regard to Joe, while Joe lied every time he opened his mouth about the issues and the history of the past few years.

Lied that the Bush Administration policies for eight years caused such a horrible recession, that Obama had no choice but to propose a giant stimulus (funny...it didn’t work). Blamed Specter for any time, on any issue, that he had voted with the Bush Administration, as though Specter was to blame for the supposed Bush-caused economic disaster, while ignoring that Specter played a crucial role in getting the stimulus and in getting tons of dough for Pennsylvania. Naturally, Specter called him on that.

Sestak is a loose cannon. I know that sounds odd, because he was very scripted. But in the ebb and flow, he will self-contradict. In the script, he will be too dead certain by half and way overstate the case. Reminds me of Obama, except that he isn’t Obama and can’t get away with quite so much.

I hope Specter takes out Sestak, then is taken down by our only hope, Pat Toomey.

“They both suck.”

I don’t know much about Sestak, but I have this rule:

If I have a choice between voting for a liberal scumbag or a conservative scumbag, I’ll vote for the conservative scumbag every time.

I could not believe it when Sestak said: “Specter promised Santorum he would vote a certain way on Supreme Court Justices. That’s just wrong.” He went on to illustrate: “For instance, we got the far right Clarence Thomas when Republicans put Anita Hill through their Inquisition.”

For that complete libel and revision (one of the most complete revisions of history I’ve ever seen), Sestak should rot in hell. Thomas was the one who went through the Inquisition (high tech lynching). It was Anita Hill who brought the false and gratuitous accusation that became the focal point of Thomas’ “borking”. I will never forget or forgive. For sestak to have stood that on its head is unforgivable.

Long live Clarence Thomas, my #1 American hero!

Good point. I well remember that insane sadist inquisition — who was the chief Sadist? Joe Biden!
