Using 00 is ridiculous for home protection. Wall penetration, collateral damage and such. An 18 inch barrel with#8 will tear an ass up at the range you’ll shoot at an intruder in your house. You’re a lot less likely to miss too

Please see the Box O Truth. Read the bottom of the second page, about the birdshot use. And note that at 12 feet, even #4 buck from a 19" no-choke shotgun has about a 3" spread, meaning you have to be about as accurate with the shotgun as you do with a pistol or carbine. You'll miss as much as you do with a pistol or carbine, you'll just have fewer rounds to miss with.

Personally, I like having 30 rounds on hand in my carbine, and another 30 ready to go with a 2 second change. And rounds that will penetrate just about any body armor a bad guy chooses to wear. All in a package that is lighter, shorter, and faster to fire than a shotgun.

Personally, I’d grab my 9mm sitting on the nightstand and go with the the theory of pouring fire on the target. I don’t have the worry of who I might kill in another room. The two of us are together and no worry about collateral damage(would hate to hit the tv or computer though). I was just commenting that buckshot is not the best choice for “home” protection

I already tried that with my wife. She admitted that she didn’t think she could shoot someone, even to save her life.

Do you think she would watch some Clint Smith vids? His defensive thinking, and defensive tactics might be a good start.

There was a Mother and Daughter who lived in a town about six miles from me. They didn't want a gun in the house, so they kept a ball peen hammer by the Mom's bed.

An illegal immigrant broke into their house one night. He took their hammer away from them, and used it to bash their heads in. As they lay there, slowly dying, he raped and sodomized them.

I really pray that your wife will be able to overcome her mindset. It is heartwrenching to think that any woman would willfully submit to the possibility of rape, sodomy, and torture at the hands of a depraved animal.

My wife has both a Mossberg 12-gauge with low-recoil shells and a 75 pound very protective dog.

If you look closely at his weapon you will see its not even loaded. No magazine in the receiver.

LOL - Well, that would make it easier for you to hand the corpse over to the police/coroner.

"Women are programmed to be the nurturers and men are programmed to be the warriors, although you couldn’t tell in some progressive households."

Depends somewhat on what you were exposed to growing up. I'm about as far from a progressive as one could imagine, yet I enjoy killing and eating things. Additionally, if it comes down to me or a criminal tresspasser ... you're going to find a room temperature criminal tresspasser. If someone is inside my house uninvited or in the middle of the night, it is first assumed that they are there to harm me and they will be harmed with extreme prejudice.

Oh, and I nurture with the best of them, too.

I would not keep the dog in a pen. We give our lab the run of the house. We previously had another lab which we kept outside on a line after we had children. He was miserable. When we leave for more than a day, we put our dog in a kennel that our vet runs. She doesn’t like it, but it’s only for a few days.

A German shepard is probably your best guard dog.

Here’s a video of a .410 slug [fired from a Taurus Judge] impacting a watermelon:

And here’s one [rather a long wait for the firing] of a .410 slug being used for deer-hunting:

I was just commenting that buckshot is not the best choice for “home” protection

Which runs counter to all testing and recommendations. Birdshot does not penetrate deep enough to be a stopper; it will injure, not kill. Dick Cheney's bird hunting a few years ago is proof of that.

ANYTHING that will penetrate a human enough to have a chance of serious trauma will also penetrate 3-4 walls, that includes 9mm from a pistol, buckshot, and 5.56mm carbine (which actually penetrates about the same as buckshot).

This is the one I've got. Mossberg 500 pump action HS410 (HS stands for Home Security). The barrel is designed to spread out the shot as it exits the barrel, so that you don't need perfect aim. If I recall correctly, it spreads it to an 8 inch diameter pattern at about 10 feet. It has very little recoil, but I would say you're going to need some practice, particularly in loading it. Some gun ranges will let you shoot a 410 bore on their range. Call around and see if yours will, and also if they can help you learn to shoot it. It would be a good idea to try out a few guns before buying. The local gun range can probably help there, but will probably steer you toward pistols, which is generally what they make their money on. A shotgun is probably your best choice for home security. Costs about $500 (if memory serves), and you have to special order it. They won't let you return it if you don't like it.

Yes, it’s a bigger dog, 110 lbs +/- 20 lbs. It sounds nearly ideal for the societal collapse you desire (they rest during the day, keeping an eye out, and actively patrol during the night), but the pen is a bad idea for that type of dog; it would be far better to train it on its ‘border’ and let it roam inside.

An interesting thing about the breed is they bond to the male [master] of the house instead of the female [mistress] (which is the norm in other breeds). They are very territorial and consider their territory [and its contents], children, other animals to all be “the master’s.”

How about 50 rds?

And rounds that will penetrate just about any body armor a bad guy chooses to wear.

I have a Remington 1100 automatic, 20 ga.

Looking at the list of guns Hubby owned, I see another 20ga Remington. I think one is lighter weight.

My son has them stored in his home. I will check with him, but I know he's not gonna want me shooting a shotgun. LOL

I also have a 22 Magnum pistol.

Yes, I certainly need an instructor and practice. I can practice on my own property as I live in the country.
