In light of the new Obama appointee, I thought this was fitting. I have my own thoughts on the issue, but feel free to share yours.

Thurgood Marshall wasn’t a judge...how did THAT turn out?
Experience is way overrated. You can be anything you want to be. One can always learn on the job. Ask that punk in the White House.

It’s complicated.
“I think I’ll be in the minority here, but I believe that a strict adherence to and understanding of the constitution as written is more important than bench time. (Note, I’m not saying Kagan falls into that category).”
Worth repeating.
Both parts!!
All her law clerks can do the grunt work.
“Is experience as a judge necessary to make a good Supreme Court Justice?”
If one leans conservative and is nominated by a republic president, then one must have plenty of experience.
If one leans left, believes the US Constitution is a living, breathing document, and adheres to social justice, then no experience required.
I seem to remember the left just about having a collective aneurysm over the Harriet Myers nomination due to the fact that she had never been a judge. I guess I wont hold my breath for similar outrage from them this time with an equally unqualified nominee.
There have been some justices that haven’t had much experience, but, again, how did they turn out? The law clerks do, in fact, do the grunt work, but it’s the opinions that matter.
