A kiddie soccer league in Ottawa is oh, so concerned about the feelings of its little players. These poor kiddies will just wilt and turn to mush if they lose by too much according to league officials. So, in order to protect the delicate feelings of Canada's youngsters, league officials have implemented a rule that forces an automatic loss for any team beating another team by more than 5 goals.
Yes, you heard me right. A winning team will automatically lose if they are winning by more than 5 goals.
Now, I'd like to puff my chest and laugh at this Cannuckle-headed foolishness. I'd love to point up to the Great White North and scoff at their lack of manliness, their limp-wristed PCisms, their mindbendingly idiotic paean to "feeealwings." Yes, I'd love to say that no American would ever stoop to such milquetoastiness. Unfortunately, Politically Correct halfwits infect both sides of the border, up there and down here alike, and we in the States have just as many numb-chucks as the Cannucks have Cannuckle-heads...

Hasn’t there been a “mercy rule” in Little League since forever? I don’t see the difference...?
My son came home from his first little league game...They lost 40 to 0. Asked him if he had a good time. He said yes. I said that’s what it’s all about.
The Lakers and Celtics both deserve the title. It would be shame to ruin their season by losing now to the other.
Ottawa = Canada’s PC Central.

Well, I guess that answers my question about the “mercy rule.”
I just figured the same rules (for this kind of thing) should be used for all kids’ sports.
That rule is game over if a team is winning by ten runs after a certain point. The winning team isn’t awarded with a loss for winning by too much, they receive the win. Thats the difference.

I am sure Boston agrees with you... ;)

That is a big difference and that should be the rule here. Just stop the game and declare a winner.
A mercy rule states that if one team gets ahead by x number of runs, then you call the game at the end of that inning. The winner wins, but doesn’t continue a thrashing.
In this system, if I were one of those coaches, I would tell my kids our goal is to end up 0 and 12 on the season with high score forfeits for each loss. I would promise them a big pizza party if they did that.
Other kids, coaches and parents would understand who the best team was and screw the league and their worthless place system.
When I played high school football in the early 1950’s we had a very good team. Our coach said and practiced the rule of not running up the score. In short, “gentlemanly behavior” is what he said.
I hate to say this. No, I really don’t I guess, someone needs to.
Much of the sentiment we will see expressed on this thread is an indicator of why this country hasn’t won anything of significance in so long and why we have the leadership we currently do.
Mercy rule is “game over”. This rule is rediculous. Perhaps, sports were far, far more fair when kids, on their own had captains pick teams and just play.
Kids use to be able to figure all that out before our children’s sports schedule replaced religion as the opiate of the masses.
The difference is: one case is adults and the other case is children. Adults who can’t tell the difference between the two are often the ones who are a little too vicariously involved in their kid’s sport. I have seen displays of outright lunacy because this point is lost on some of the adults who are involved in children’s sports (parents and coaches). Perspective, and sanity, go right out the window.
Easy way to win: own-goal yourself 5 times...
Think you missed the inversion here. The mercy rule is that if a team is up by X goals, the game is called and the team WINS.
Here, if a team is up by 5 goals, they LOSE.
“Hasnt there been a ‘mercy rule’ in Little League since forever? I dont see the difference...?”
Pay attention. Mercy rules end the game once a team has surpassed the other by a certain definite margin, the winning team being, as usual, the one that’s ahead when play stops. This rule stops play and awards the win to the lagging team once the leading team surpasses a certain set margin. Apparently a rather small margin, at that. I mean, 5 points? That’s not a big deal.
