Letter: Let the South lead by example
The West Liberty Index ^ | May 26, 2010 | Michael J. Schneider

I’ve often heard the statement: “The south shall rise again.” I think Texas and Arizona are the vanguard of a new conservative movement that might result in a second Civil War, perhaps with the south winning this time. Arizona, ignored by the Obama Administration, boldly took action asserting its right as a state to defend itself against the serious consequences of illegal immigration. The Texas Board of Education decided it was time to eliminate the liberal bias in social studies textbooks and ensure they were written to allow a broader interpretation of historical and global events. Both of the above actions drew criticism from liberals who used the tired claim to racism.

What should Iowa learn from these two progressive states? First, we should not rely on the federal government to do what it constitutionally mandated to do. Instead, the president and congress are currently trying to assert control of most of the private aspects of our lives (i.e. Obamacare), while ignoring issues like protecting our borders. Second, we, as parents, are responsible to see our children are taught the truth with regard to the social sciences. This means that teachers should endeavor to present subjects such as history in as factual a manner as possible. Texts should not be skewed to favor one political ideology or another. I was fortunate to have received a Catholic education for K-12. The advantage of this was that the teachers were able to broaden the scope of their teaching to include topics not allowed in public schools. Unfortunately, I did not provide the same experience for my three children, with the result, they were indoctrinated with liberal bias.

Iowa has the opportunity to join with Texas and Arizona in enforcing immigration laws and making curriculum changes. But why not go further? Declare abortion illegal; make English the official state language; define marriage as solely between a man and a woman. Iowa should stop passing stupid laws like the one that prohibits bar and restaurant owners to decide whether they want to allow smoking. Repeal legislation that restricts human freedoms and pass only those measures needed to promote the public welfare.

Finally, stand up to the federal government. It has been done before.

Our liberal rag, The Arizona Repugnant is saying that Arizona's Immigration bill has turned Arizona from red to blue. They do a lot of stories about UFOs too.

LOL!

It’s a loser argument to connect the fight against socialism with the nostalgia for a failed slave regime.

But funny I saw this. On Yahoo they feature a picture found of two slave children sitting on a barrel taken by Matthew Brady’s studio, plus a sales document for a slave.

I look at the children in the picture and wonder what kind of depraved monster can look at the same children and see property.

Not to get sidetracked speculating about civil war, but if some southern states did decide to leave the union, who would object? Or more specifically, who would object strongly enough to be willing to fight over it? Liberals wouldn't. They hate the southern states. Conservatives wouldn't, since it would represent a real chance to have a conservative republic. That leaves the great yawning middle, and they wouldn't care because American Idol is on TV. So who would be willing to fight it out?

I mean just imagine if some states decided to secede while Obama was president. Where would the political pressure come from to compel him to do an Abe Lincoln and hold the Union together by force? His leftist base? Nope. Conservatives? Nope. Squishy moderates?

That's why I don't think a civil war would happen. Americans can barely stomach having our troops Afghanistan to kill Islamic terrorists. Our rules of engagement are so strict that we're talking about giving medals for Heroic Restraint (or whatever it is). Would these same Americans really be willing to send in the troops to kill Americans in a state that wanted to leave? Ain't no way. Secession would be completely bloodless this time around.

I think you are right that if done right, there would be no war.

I'm on board with Arizona but Texas is all talk. So far all they've contributed is Bushes and Hutchinson. Big woop.

Easy to judge someone based on modern ethics. That was society at that time. Those people were raised to think that black slaves were chattel.

Possible. They'd probably fear the creation of truly liberal (in the classical sense) republic. I doubt their influence would be strong enough to counteract public feeling though.

They own Barry, who’s the de facto president.

It’s so bad for the RAG, they are trying to get me to “subscribe” for a $1/week and are using the argument of the Sunday coupons, instead of what a “great Newspaper” it is. lol

That thing is on its last legs. Arizonans just aren’t interested in liberal psychobabble.

Are liberals ever going to go away? No
Are those same liberals ever going to stop the destructive policies they push? No

When either they or us gets dominant enough to freely abuse the other side the dominated side will rise up. That’ll be the conflict, maybe not a full on war.

It has nothing to do with pining for a “failed slavery regime”. I agree with the poster who pointed out the folly of retroactively applying morals to prior periods. If anybody here or any liberal in SF for that matter was born a son or daughter of a plantation owner along about 1830 you’d think slavery was a-ok because you would be conditioned to believe slaves weren’t equal humans.

I understand to a point. My notion was more of the modern revisionism of neo cofederates and how connecting the two was a loser idea.

However, I would say that the evil of slavery was recognized at the time. The society was not uniform in any way. Charles Sumner was quite vocal about it. The position of the Republican Party was, before the war, to prevent the spread of slavery into the territory.

Plus, regardless of the time in history or the ‘society’ I don’t see how any person can look at another and conceive of them being less than human. Seventy years ago millions were gassed and I think of the advanced society that did that, with some of those people still alive today, and I cannot think that any excuse would relieve them of their guilt anymore than what occured with slavery.

It is too easy to consign the savagry of man to another separate time in history when history is ongoing and people are people. It is easier to deal with that way.
When was the last genocide? When was Ruwanda? 1994? How much has mankind progressed?

The more I reflect on it, the less forgiving I feel.

Sorry, a post script.

Did you go to Yahoo and look at the photo?

Just curious. I don’t feel like turning this into another CW strawman fight. But I do wonder going back in time when talking to the boys and them talking back at which point could someone decide they could be sold? Beaten? Separated from their family? Worked in the fields with no more consideration than a mule? I mean to a person back then, not now. Surely they would recognise the humanity?

Well, several.
The first is when I think of the drive of Margaret Sanger to target blacks with abortion.
The next is the comparison I made with Germany gassing millions.
Finally, the comparison of man in general, regardless of the point in history, to be depraved.

But all of it, including my posts, especially my posts, are straying a bit from the original post of individual states asserting their rights in the face of impending socialism.
