A new “nonlethal” weapon that uses microwave energy to create intense pain has been deployed in Afghanistan. The Active Denial System, which burns the top layer of skin via microwaves, is in Afghanistan for testing. The weapon is designed to shoot an invisible beam of energy at people, creating an intense burning sensation that forces them to flee. The Air Force has called it the "goodbye effect." It has not been used before in military operations.

It is a great idea. I remember seeing a special on this a couple years ago when someone or people in congress couldn’t believe we would develop such a weapon. It was supposes to be cruel and unusual to use this on people. The designers then said whould you father people be shot? At least they will live after this is used.

You need to put this in terms the rats and so-called lobs will go for. Tell them it has less environmental impact than a fence, and that we’re going to make it solar/wind powered. Seriously.

Oh, they will. After field tests in Afghanistan they will put it on our borders, facing the US citizens and LE agents attempting to interdict illegals and drug traffickers swarming across our borders.
We have armed incursion and de facto occupation in areas of Arizona and the Obama administration's answer is to warn Americans to stay away and avoid confrontation.
Oh mighty USA how you have fallen from greatness to having armed barbarians crossing your borders at will and street thugs holding the highest offices and plundering your treasury.

The Brits learned the lasting lessons of non-lethal crowd control in N. Ireland over the past decades. Chemical mace and plastic bullets, not a heat ray, but the lessons will be the same.
Angry crowds “dispersed” by non-lethals don’t go home and drink green tea and practice yoga. They take up sniping and bombing, since the non-violent outlets for their anger and frustration were taken away.
Imagine a massive tea party type rally driven off screaming in pain by heat rays.
Think they will all turn into Ghandi? Think again.
