Good idea...I’ll watch that again over the weekend!

I know that Rush Limbaugh liked the series and talked about it.

Yes, if someone could post their thoughts on this series, I would appreciate it. It looked good, but then some reviews I read said that it was a very liberal interpretation of events and painted the founding fathers in a very bad light...

Thanks for posting this. It's a masterpiece, IMHO. Among many memorable scenes, a couple of favorites:

Adams visits Jefferson while he's drafting the Declaration and they discuss the verbiage. It's dawning on Adams how profound the document is becoming under Jefferson's pen. But at that moment, the document that changed the course of human history is not of as much interest to Jefferson as the chair he's sitting in - how he's tinkered with it and made it swivel!

When Adams meets King George III. A deceptively quiet, subdued scene that is incredibly powerful.

My husband and I watched it over the Labor Day weekend last year, and it was awesome. My parents gave me the set for my birthday this year, and I was tickled. I went back and reread McCollough’s biography of Adams on which the series was based. I’ve been on a colonial/founding fathers kick every since (I love history anyway, so it’s enjoyable for me).

Coming out of HBO I’ve been really leery about it being revisionist history liberal crap. That’s my main concern with it.

I loved the series. I rented it, but would like to buy it in the future when finances allow.

It was as historically accurate as they could make it. Very well acted.

I'm still in learning mode and would defer to a bonefide historian as to comments on the liberal spin. I, too, would like to hear an expert's thought.

I thought the clip was moving. In light of the current political climate, I long to get back to our roots.

I hear you. I thought HBO did an excellent job on “Band of Brothers.”

I have heard a few people say that they portrayed the founding fathers negatively, but I didn’t see that at all. They were men, and to that extent, subject to the same flaws as anyone else. Adams was a brilliant man, but he could be a bit egocentric and stuffy at times. I still admire him a great deal and thought Paul Giamatti was an excellent choice to portray him.

I thought Ben Franklin was shown more in the way that Adams saw him and not how he (Franklin) really was. They were two totally different personalities, but each had an important role in this country’s beginnings. I’m reading a biography about Franklin right now—how the man ever had time to sleep is beyond me!

The series overall was quite good. But Parts 1 and 2 were exceptionally well done, IMHO. Especially worth viewing over the July 4th weekend.

This is one of only a handful of HBO DVDs I've ever bought.

Thanks for your feedback - it helps! I wanted to watch it with my homeschooled boys but I am committed to them having a very accurage version of history.

I don’t mind some historical errors or omissions as long as I catch them and can explain them to my kids

It is outstanding. I watched it and then went back and recorded it for a friend who doesn’t have HBO and watched it again. It was very impressive, all things considered.

George Washington takes the oath of office

The loss of respect for the God to Whom the oath of office is directed, the transformation of that oath into a mere formality, is the death of our free republic and our liberty. It is the consigning of our posterity to slavery and death.

Great commentary.

Thanks all for your views. Be safe this weekend.
