I have also read he was a great shot with the shotgun.

Very good rendition. A lot of people simply bypass Sousa’s dynamic subtleties, preferring the ‘balls to the wall’ approach.

Sousa's band scored with several recordings of "The Stars and Stripes Forever." In the summer of 1997, the tune was issued on the Columbia and Berliner labels and would have topped the charts had the "top 40" format existed at the time. Bestselling versions were also issued on the Gram-o-Phone label in 1901 and on the Victor label in 1917.
An excellent recording on the Edison label from around 1912 is available here.
