In special deal, charity gives rationing advocate Berwick health coverage for life
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/14/2010 | Byron York

Donald Berwick, recess-appointed by President Obama to head Medicare and Medicaid, is a well-known advocate of health care rationing and admirer of Britain's National Health Service. Rising health costs and limited resources "require decisions about who will have access to care and the extent of their coverage," Berwick wrote in 1999. Last year, he said, "The decision is not whether or not we will ration care -- the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open." Of the NHS, Berwick says simply, "I love it," adding that it is "one of the great human health care endeavors on earth."

As it turns out, Berwick himself does not have to deal with the anxieties created by limited access to care and the extent of coverage. In a special benefit conferred on him by the board of directors of the Institute for Health Care Improvement, a nonprofit health care charitable organization he created and which he served as chief executive officer, Berwick and his wife will have health coverage "from retirement until death."

No mistake, the “ruling class” will have a different “tier” of healthcare than the “masses”.

Berwick’s “rationing with our eyes open” is simply an admission that those with political pull will get treatment and those without will be left to suffer and die.

Ahh, isn’t that special that hard working donors are paying for his and his wife’s health care for life. For it being a non-profit organization, some sure are profiting.

Instead I think they should have pulled the plug on Berwick.

We are back to the days of the royal tyranny of the British except now instead of the British, it is our very own government.

If Obama Care stands soon the Banana republics will be the place that the rich go for their health care as well as for their private banking. The unregulated will become the best available.

The rich and well connected will always be able to get the best health care.

If you have money you can travel to where the best of whatever it is you want is available.

The rest of us will simply try to avoid the worst of what is available to us.

Internet chat rooms will supply us with the information of which hospitals and doctors to avoid.

Thanks Obama.

Quiet correct!

Berwick’s “rationing with our eyes open” is simply an admission that those with political pull will get treatment and those without will be left to suffer and die.

No, I'm afraid it's worse than that. I think that what it means is that, when doling out medical care from an increasingly overburdened and underfunded system, they will not be impartial. So, unlike blindfolded Justitia, they will rather take into account various other considerations, like race (to "compensate for past inequalities," of course), income-level, age, party membership, etc.

The ones with "political pull" won't even be waiting in line. They will likely have a completely independent and autonomous health-care system.

Regards,

Hey, at least they will suffer and die for “free”. No medical bills, that’s the first priority right? And even if you’re one of the people that pays confiscatory taxes for the privelege of soffering and dying for “free”, that’s okay because the governement withholds that tax and you don’t really feel it anyway. So it’s all good!

“No mistake, the “ruling class” will have a different “tier” of healthcare than the “masses”.”

As a doc, if it ever came to that, the ‘ruling class’ would have to wait until each and every other ‘non-privileged’ patient was seen by me before I'd see them. Either that or I'd quit first.

It is in fact already coming to that. You won't have a choice, Doc. Here's how it works, and why this monster must be stopped: within the next few years there will be a declared "national health care emergency," in the form of a critical shortage of health care providers. This systemic failure has already been engineered into HRC. You will be contacted by the Ready Reserve Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, and specifically directed as to where and when you may practice medecine. They can do that through special enforcement powers, and spiffy uniforms. Your patients will be drawn from a list compiled by bureaucrats. Don't like it? Want to fight it? Want to quit? There are many ways to enforce compliance.

If we get to that point, there will be no more USA, and we will all be fighting a much different fight.
