Terry Jeffrey: Obama's transportation goal: coercing people out of cars
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/29/10 | Terry Jeffrey

Posted on 07/29/2010 9:13:11 AM PDT by Nachum

Liberals love Ray LaHood because he is the type of Republican who wants government to control more of American life. When President Obama named him secretary of transportation, it was not so much an act of bipartisanship as an expression of ideological solidarity.

About a month into his tenure, LaHood told the Associated Press that the administration should consider taxing people for every mile they drive their car, a system that would require tracking people's movements.

"We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled," he said. "What I see this administration doing is this -- thinking outside the box on how we fund our infrastructure in America."

The Birchers may have been right after all. The commies have always wanted to control freedom of movement.

You have to make a distinction between de jure and de facto.

Anyone who cannot see this is the ultimate goal of statists just doesn’t have their eyes open.

To them, cars are evil. But, they will be the only ones “authorized” to drive, for government business, don’t you know.

This burns my ass.

"Obama's transportation goal: coercing people out of cars , "

I came through Atlanta this morning...it ain't working, so far.

He did such wonderful job on the oil spill, I can hardly wait to see what he does with transportation. Does his blackberry get a good signal on the 18th hole?

Who knows where I picked up this factoid, but years and years ago, I learned that there are essentially three groups of men & women politically from the Boomer group & just prior:

1) the Father Knows Best traditionalists—who can be reasoned with and pushed.
2) the middle of the road types—who try to keep on keeping on
3) the counter-culturalists—who are dogmatic totalitarians in their actions and world view, even though they portray the ‘peace, love, dope, dropout’ persona. These people treat others, women and all who disagree with absolute contempt. Power-hungry and driven by all kinds of vice, they are true threats to all who come in contact with them. And yet, these are now in power/prevalent in the workplace, and their values are imposed in nearly every venue.

I have found this to be axiomatic.

"We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled," he said.

This would be good for those of us who consume gasoline far in excess of the miles we travel. My wife and I both drive 6.0L vehicles.

I'd just as soon let sone liberal in a Prius or SmartCar subsidize my Jaguar.

Of course, this tag would have to REPLACE the gas tax, not pile on top of it.

I will umplug the speedometer in my car and use the one in the portable GPS mounted to the windshield.

In NY the state inspecion records the milage for one inspection to the next. Nobody notices it, but I would bet that most states that have mandatory vehicle inspections do this.

And a previous poster is correct, I already pay a tax per gallon in fuel, which is a proportional milage tax as it is.

"It is a way to coerce people out of their cars, yeah. ..." LaHood said.

Fine. Let's start a pilot program and coerce all employees of the Transportation Department out of their cars. If that works out ok, move on to liberals, progressives, and Democrats. Finally, if that works, move on to coercing the rest of the nation out of their cars. That seems like the most reasonable approach to coercion to me.

On the other hand, I suppose Ray could use more persuasive methods of coercion if people resisted the pilot projects, like maybe simply stopping and hanging every 10th motorists from the nearest light pole. That would probably do the trick, right Ray? It's certainly worked successfully in the past. At least for a while.

So this mutt LaHood is a carjacker wannabe?

Someone should throw him over his LaHood and slap some sense into him.

How much longer must we stand frozen like a deer in the headlights watching death come straight at us? Almost every day we hear of yet another assault on our wealth, freedom and even our lives. How much longer??? I can’t stand the torment of watching my country fall apart. How much longer???
