Not going to VN was not a hard decision to make if someone had a responsibility to their family or, in this case, a business.

You just made my point. There was no decision to make if one was drafted. They were in the military and the decision was made for them.
Only cowards ran out and got married, had a child, enrolled in college, went to Canada or ran to the National Guard/Reserves to avoid the draft. The only business exemptions were rare and ONLY for somebody whose daddy owned a business that supported the war effort and contributed heavily to a Congressman with pull. LOL
Even if his daddy was making the boots the GI’s wore or the M-16’s or the panchos or the MREs I don’t think he deserves an exemption from military service when others were drafted.
In other words, there is no “business” that is more important than serving ones country and no person who should be exempt. The exemptions were for the elite kids only and that’s what I have a problem with. Ergo, the draft will now be called “Obama’s Army” and an “all-volunteer Army” but I know the Obama kids will never serve. Back to square one.
Let me ask u: do you really think the gov. should have the right to dictate what our children to after high school? I love my country and my military but I think the military is best left for volunteers who join to serve their country and not b/c theyve been forced to.

How old are you?
I ask this only because I am the wife of a Viet Nam vet, and I’m trying to figure out what you’re saying.
I do know that you think some folks were cowards...do you have any experience or knowledge of times back then?
