It’s easy to become “upset” when you’re not the one doing the dying.

How much common sense do these nuns have?

The original reports noted that the guy had three priors for DUI. The post never indicated the immigration status, although we all assumed the worst. It seems drunk driving is an accepted cultural norm in South America and we should just get used to having our loved ones slaughtered by know illegal alien drunk drivers. Shoosh - where is the love?

My daughter attends Catholic high school. I was so glad when the last nun retired. The first thing the principal did (after the nun left) was shut down the Amnesty International chapter the nun ran. The principal told the members, "If you want to battle for social justice, join the Right to Life Club."

The same as the meat a priest can eat on Friday - "none."

They seem to have forgotten the “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s” part of the Bible.

It doesn't seem illegitimate to the nuns to focus on the driver's drunkenness (which the sister mentioned in this article.) He ought to have stopped drunk driving, and did not. Why is it illegitimate to focus also on the fact that by law, he ought to have been deported and was not?

Legitimate law enforcement is not a violation of mercy; public safety is not a violation of mercy; deporting a chronically lawless border-violator is not a violation of mercy; and talking about the authorities' own lawlessness in failing to deport him, is not a violation of mercy.

The administration of justice, too, comes under the banner of love.

I’ll say it AGAIN;
The nun’s own Catholic church was complicit in this tragedy, since they’ve been actively covering and lobbying for the illegals for some time.

I’m almost out of sympathy.

About the same amount as a politician. It flew out the window when they kept their own names and forgot how to dress. The Dominican and SSND nuns I had must be spinnning in their graves, especially Sister John Berchman and Sister Norene Therese.

I wish there was a more forceful word for "disingenuous." So much vicious damage is done disingenuousness, it deserves a real head-slap of a synonym. This is a perfect case in point - it's the religious order that's making this political, under the guise of decrying politicisization.

I don't know - "hypocrisy," maybe? Except it's more subtle than that, more snarky and weasly and oily and nasty.

Sorry, but the victim(s) could have very well been my husband or preschooler or both. This guy should not have been in the country, let alone on the road. I’d like to know the DUI rate is illegal immigrants.

On September 1, 2002, illegal alien Maximiliano Cilerio Esparza, 32, attacked, beat and sexually assaulted two Immaculate Heart of Mary nuns in Klamath Falls, Oregon, killing one, Sister Helen Chaska, 53, who was strangled to death with her rosary beads.

Both women were doing missionary work when the crimes occurred. The Immaculate Heart of Mary is an Orthodox Catholic order devoted to helping the sick, hungry, and homeless.

Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb said Esparza had just left “the only strip joint in Klamath Falls” before he attacked the women.

Esparza was convicted in 1988 of robbery and kidnapping in Los Angeles. He was sentenced to six years in prison, was released in 1992 and was on probation until 1995. By law, this man should have been deported to Mexico after his release.

“According to police, Esparza head-butted one of the nuns, then beat both to the ground with his fists. He then raped both sisters, twisting each woman’s rosary beads around her neck to control her during the assault. Sister Helen Chaska died at the scene; today’s autopsy results (reported in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer) revealed the cause of death to be ligature strangulation, with Sister Chaska’s rosary beads found embedded in her neck. After the assault the other nun—who, as a sexual assault victim, remains unnamed—returned to her hotel and instructed the night clerk to call the police, who sped the 52-year-old sister to Klamath Falls’ Merle West Medical Center. Before her release, she helped police construct a sketch of the assailant, who was recognized and apprehended within 16 hours.”

If so, how were they paid for? Does he have other family members here illegally? If so, have they been arrested and released?
