Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who for more than a year has been nearly silent on her role in the forced unionization of more than 40,000 home day care providers, boasted of her involvement at a national union convention in 2008, Mackinac Center Communications Specialist Kathy Hoekstra reports in a video released today.
"In Michigan, because of the partnership between AFSCME and the governor's office, this means that 45,000 new AFSCME members, quality child care providers, will be on the ground providing care to children," the governor said in a speech at the 38th international convention of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "That is great for our state."
The Center's six-minute video reveals the behind-the-scenes steps taken by the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor to make it possible for these business owners and private contractors to be roped into a public-sector union. Michigan is the only state where home day care workers have been unionized without legislation or an executive order. Instead, the Michigan Department of Human Services and Mott Community College in Flint entered into an interlocal agreement to create a so-called employer for the day care providers.
The Mackinac Center Legal Foundation is suing the Michigan Department of Human Services to stop the agency's diversion of nearly $3 million in union "dues" from providers to union coffers. The money is being taken from subsidy checks that day care owners receive on behalf of low-income parents who need child care while they work or attend school.
"This footage forever ties this scheme to Gov. Granholm," said Patrick Wright, director of the MCLF. "This was not a bureaucratic happenstance. It was a deliberate and strategic choice."

Forced unionization as a condition of employment is slavery, and should be illegal.
It’s up to Michiganders to drain the corruption from their particular swamp.
There is no reason to live in Michigan. Democratic control for years has ruined Detroit and the state as well.
The next amendment to the constitution should be something that places an iron bar between Government and Unions in the same manner as church and state.
If we don’t do this then at some point the forces of Socialism networks will eventually seize the power of the executive branch and simply mandate it thru decree.
Then America will be dead of ever.
Socialism is to a Democratice Republic as Cancer is to the Human Body.
Michigan is third in line behind California and Illinois on the list of liberal sphincter states.
And Texas is 3rd on the stimulus recipent states.
Forcing certain day care operators to pay union dues knowing
those dues go directly to democratic party.
Business as usual...
I certainly appreciate the pings.
This witch is out of office soon but she is leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. Snyder may be able to do something about this.
We actually picked up a house seat the other night. Mike Shirkey won the race to fill the seat vaccated by the death of Mike Simpson (65th district). Shirkey promises to push to eliminate union preference in state contracts.
Thanks for the link, my FRiend.
(bookmarked for later)
Yeah, you’re right. My bad. Texas sucks and is on a par with the liberal sewers of Michigan, Ill, and Cali.
Dude, put down the crack pipe.
” Snyder may be able to do something about this.”
I wouldn’t hold my breath. First Snyder is Democrat lite, and he hasn’t won yet. Expect a huge effort to get Bernero elected to further destroy this state.
Well be an man and admit that your state is number three leech on the gravy train boy.
Why don’t the providers vote to decertify the union? Seems like the obvious thing to do...
Part of her job application to the Obama Regime.
We’re working on it.
The only possible advantage I see to electing liberal Snyder is that he “might” stand up to the unions. We need to pick up more seats in the state legislature and eliminate the RINOs we do have.
As things stand now, As of November 2009, Republicans hold a majority of seats in the Senate with 22; Democrats hold 16 seats. As of 2009, Democrats hold a majority of seats in the House of Representatives with 67, and Republicans hold the remaining 43 seats. (66 and 44) after tuesday.
I suspect Granholm will take over the position as Obama’s economic advisor when she leaves office in Michigan.
After all, she was his economic advisor on his transition team.
For those that are screaming for term limits, just look to Michigan as the example of the resulting mess. I’m speaking directly to some of those that I respect the most, i.e. Dave Ramsey and Glenn Beck.
Michigan politics has become a circular rotation of incompetency.
She’s done such a great job in the mitten state; she’s definitely ready for prime time.
Snyder will win....hands down.
Roll with what we have.......
Funny you would say that, and at the same time use the screen name that you use.
Few, if any, other state(s) has a deer season as long and varied as that in Michigan. There are others too but that is one good reason.
How much do you know about RINO Rick? I take it as not much.
Did you know that he is an environmental nutball and as such, would likely be happy banning hunting?
Most of that ilk are the same in that regard.
I stand corrected. Other than having a good deer hunting season (as Ted Nugent will vouch for) there is no reason to live in Michigan, until Conservatives run the Democrats out.
