Discrimination? Good Looks Can Hurt Female Job Applicants

The next time you apply for a job as a mechanical engineer or construction supervisor, take a good look in the mirror, ladies. According to a new study, being attractive can actually hurt a woman's chances of landing certain jobs that are deemed "masculine," according to a study by the University of Colorado Denver Business School.

In a study released in the May/June "Journal of Social Psychology," Stefanie Johnson, assistant professor of management at UC Denver Business School, finds that beautiful women tend to face discrimination when applying for "masculine" jobs traditionally dominated by men, where physical appearance is perceived as unimportant.

Some of those jobs include manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer, construction supervisor, director of security, hardware salesperson, prison guard and tow-truck driver.

"In these professions, being attractive was highly detrimental to women," said Johnson. On the other hand, attractive women are preferred in jobs traditionally considered "feminine," such as lingerie or cosmetics salesperson, secretary, nurse, dietician or social worker.

The study found that the preference for physically attractive individuals tends to hold across cultures and ethnicities. Conversely, this wasn't the case with men, leading Johnson to conclude in the study that "there is still a double standard when it comes to gender."

Just remember once “they” get in, “they” start hiring “them” as soon as “they” are in a position
to do so. So, if you don’t want to eventually have
your job replaced by one of “them”, I wouldn’t do it.

I have not seen any of the hiring conditions that this article speaks of. I haven’t worked for any company that ( honestly, now) took into account anyone’s looks over another. Jokes have been made, comments passed, but it’s never come down to a hiring decision.

I dare say that this diversity website tends to think the worst, or shine the light on nothing and swear that something was just there - and it moved.

Women with long, curly hair, too, are not taken seriously when interviewed for jobs.

I actually was promoted instead of an older guy 24 years ago because the CEO then was a dirty old man. I despised him and eventually got him fired for cooking the books. But the bias wasn't my fault, I did nothing to encourage it and I have always proven myself capable. I've been on the job 24 years and even my current boss, who I have actually hired twice, will tell you straight out that I run the company.

That being said, I really don't see that trend today, it is way too dangerous to even consider in this litigious society.

Rush’s claim that feminism was invented so unattractive woman could get jobs has some merit.

a study written by UGLY feminists.

Probably, but nice looking women attract a lot of unwarranted animosity - Sarah Palin is a prime example.

Apparently the author has never seen the investment banking industry.

One, that isn’t true. Studies show that attractive people in both sexes are treated better than less attractive peers. Soe attractive men generally benefit over less attractive men, and I would surmise, more so from women than men (as generally men care less about what other men look like and more if they are competent).

Two, men, women, life isn’t fair. We all get worse looking as we get older too. Things don’t work so well after awhile. Man up.

If there are two otherwise comparable female applicants, I can't imagine too many men thinking "well, let's take the ugly one". The reverse scenario is plausible.

For the most part, life is easier for attractive women. The only exception I can think of is real attractive woman. They have to go through (early) life deflecting attention. There's a young woman (young enough to be my daughter) across the office floor. I've never once established eye contact with her or gotten a smile. I wonder if she's developed a sixth sense about guys that could potentially be pests (I look the part) and puts out an air of unfriendliness just so she can get through the day unmolested by drooling pursuers.

I had a house FSBO and a really hot young female realtor tried to get the listing. I turned her down and went with a male realtor to avoid temptation.

Rush’s claim that feminism was invented so unattractive woman could get jobs...

Close, but the quote is "to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society".

Rush is sharp, but he’s often harsh, and sometimes cruel. Would that all so seeking were “allowed” access to the “mainstream of society”, whatever that might be.
As to pretty girls in the factory that employs me, quite a few quickly enough become pregnant girls and then part-time girls, so the factory doesn’t try over-hard to hire ‘em. But Corporate orders that more women and minorities be offered jobs, so...
