Amateur Hour at CNN: Error-Filled Chyron During Beck Rally
Newsbusters ^ | August 28, 2010 | Jeff Poor

There is something about CNN and the people writing chyrons for the alleged "most trusted name in news" with the "best political team on television." Last week, these geniuses clarified the White House's position on President Barack Obama's religion.

However on CNN Aug. 28 coverage of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, which CNN reporters and anchors seemingly held their nose up and reported on throughout the event, the chyron on the screen was something likened to one of those parlor games where you circle the numerous errors involved. Everybody at CNN needs to be drug-tested.

That's usually how it goes in the television world.

somewhat off topic, but just went over to Google News.

On google news now, the top stories are:

1. Al Sharpton’s rally
2. the 5 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
3. Paris Hilton’s cocaine arrest
4. a story about a California prison riot
5. Muslim youth concerns about anti-Muslim sentiment
6. the Miller-Murkowski election in Alaska

There was nothing about Glenn Beck in the headlines. It seems odd, especially since the #1 story was Al Sharpton’s rally in Washington today. It seems odd that they didn’t mention that there was another big rally in Washington today.

I ran the old Chyron MAX back in my studio production days and something like that would NEVER be tolerated.

I won’t use google - they’re too close w the Obambi admin; and, they give lots of $$s to dems (as I understand it, they get a lot of $s from people using/clicking on their site).

I use Bing and out of curiosity, I went to bing.com and clicked on News (left side). The top item on the news list was the Glen Beck rally:

I guess as long as it is someone speaking at a Tea Party event and spelled vaguely correctly it is OK. If they mixed up Sharpton and Jackson you can bet they would be on their knees begging for forgiveness.

Yeah I have some back ground in that very field as well and you're right it would not be put up with for a second.

Is there more than one site for Google News?

I just looked and Beck was listed first, and Sharpton is not listed at all.

Google News was consistently obtuse when I used to check them out; it appears that they remain steadfast.

On the other hand, the Mediacom home page news has seen fit to mention Beck... albeit in smaller type below the far more important story "Baby tiger found in bag at Thai airport."

CNN spent most of the day covering race-baiting fraud Sharpton and his 300 people. the rest of their coverage was about Katrina, as if it just happened.

I din't think a rally is intended to 'convince' anybody, per se. I see it as more a motivational device.

I had one disastrous day with the old MAX. All of a sudden during a live teleconference, it went wacko on me, function keys half worked, effects were on and off. The power supply had caught on fire but it was in another space so nobody knew what was going on.

I was just there. Beck is at the top. Sharpton isn’t mentioned. Katrina is #2.

You have to figure all in attendance were, by definition, already motivated. I'm not trying to be negative, I guess I don't understand.

Meetings like this are intended primarily to encourage the base.

I think getting 300,000 or 500,000 or 1,000,000 people (whatever the final count turns out to be) to an event such as this is an amazing thing.

We need a huge turnout for the election in November, and this helps inspire me, if nobody else.

Isn't it very telling that not one of the detractors of the Glenn Beck rally "Restoring Honor" mentioned this important achievement:

BECK RAISED OVER $5 MILLION DOLLARS TODAY FOR THE FAMILIES OF THE SPECIAL OPERATIONS WARRIORS FOUNDATION...WITHIN ONE HOUR!

Beck broadcast a number for people to Text in their donation of $10 or more. He asked that people join together and everyone text at the same time. In about an hour later the sum of $5 million was announced as received for this honorable charity.

Yet no mention of this achievement was made by any of the media, by Sharpton or his people, or even put forth by many of the Beck supporters. This was the greatest feat of the day, and it has hardly been noticed.

Those folks will go home, and talk to their family, friends, and co-workers. They’ll be able to tell those folks who were not there, but listened to the network news reports about it, how the media purposely LIED about it. May even start those who have never thought about it, to start questioning what the MSM tells them about politics in general, and Republicans in particular.

If it had been a Tea Party event, Victoria Jackson would have been strumming and singing “There’s a Communist in the White House”. Sadly, that part was missing today.

Excellent point. Wasn’t that stunning? When Glenn asked everyone to send that text message, I had a feeling that just about everyone in that crowd would do so. That’s the character of the people who were there.

After his request, my husband said Let’s make a contribution. And I’m sure many, many people who were listening at home or elsewhere made the same decision. (We are clueless about texting! :) I told him we already gave yesterday; that’s the $100 I said I wanted to send via Glenn’s website, and he had agreed. It’s the least we can do for those who gave all.

Who did this rally convince?
***********************************************************
Thanks to Beck (AND ALSO the Tea Party) a good portion of this country is waking up. I don’t believe it was to “convince” anyone, but it sure felt good to see so many people taking the trouble to show support for restoring and taking back our country. Yeah, there was a lot of religion and the courage(wars) of our beginnings...so therefore what I got out of it was ‘PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION’. Vague for some, but loud and clear to me.
