America needs more High Tech Engineers to boost production and lower unemployment
Paul Owen, discusses Americas forgotten immigration problem: our need for high tech engineers.
According to Owen, so much focus has been put the visible waves of immigrant and cheap factory laborers that weve forgotten about the invisible undertow in the form of a brain drain that continues to erode Americas leading edge in technology.
Paul Owen asks, 30 million illegal unskilled immigrants or 300,000 high tech scientists and engineers: Why is it so difficult to decide? We have two immigration problems. The first is the illegal unskilled immigrants but the second is the inability to legally allow skilled scientists and engineers into our country. Social revisionist have managed to destroy our once vaunted education system where we now must import engineering and scientific talent. If they are allowed to prevail will we become a third rate country?
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and others have sounded the alarm for the need to allow highly educated and creative high tech engineers to stay in this country after they graduated from our universities. Instead, they are forced to go home to work in India, China and other nations that may quickly overtake whats left of our cutting edge.
Unemployment is the epidemic of the United States today. Current government stats on this scourge are in the 10% range but actual unemployment, including those who stopped looking for work, is in the 20% range.
Paul Owens solution to our unemployment problem is simple. 1) Legalize a few hundred thousand high tech workers that our nation needs to boost our production of cutting edge products, creating millions of jobs, and 2) Shut the doors illegal cheap labor, providing millions of blue collar jobs for legal U.S. citizens.
There is enough talent in this country. The wages are too low then less people want to major in science and engineering. Not buying it. Wages for engineers and scientists have not gone up that much indicating plenty of supply. Facts are a stubborn thing. Adjusted for inflation they have not gone up at all in 30 years.

10% unemployment - really 20% - and we want to solve the problem not by restoring confidence in our financial and tax system, but by bringing in a few hundred thousand more Chinese and Indian engineers - and their families, and their parents, etc.
This guy just wants a job with the obama administration. He is probably as stupid as the average Obambi appointee.
Maybe we should import some Indian weblog writers to do this bozos job for him, as well.
This is not an immigration problem. It’s an education problem. Stop funding every nincompoop in the country to get a Women’s Study or Postmodern Literature degree and reserve Federal aid solely to national security issues, like . . . science, technology, engineering and math degrees.
Its all about keeping those wages low. If wages went up, there would be no supply problem.

This was becoming glaringly obvious in the late nineties. Why would anyone want an engineering or IT degree when you knew you would be worked to death and kept on just long enough to train your replacement; Apu from Bangalore before being tossed out in your mid-thirties?
Well put. How much would HP, Apple and Microsoft put into education if we didn't give them the international option every time they ask for it? Instead Gates gives billions to programs around the world instead of at home, and out of his areas of expertise rather than in them.

I agree. The big companies don't want to hire more costly American engineers and give them the training they need for whatever tasks they are being hired for. Go jump in a lake big co's . . . you have profits and are sitting on trillions of dollars . . . and are asking to give salaries to less expensive foreign workers while Americans have a hard time finding work . . .
Actually, you’re a little early. There was a big spike in computer and IT majors in the mid 90s-early 00s that coincided with the .COM boom. When the air went out of that, the number of tech majors took a big hit. Not all jobs are going to Apu. Many Indians are HORRIBLE programmers (compared to Americans) and even call center jobs are coming back.
This is an absolute joke. There are plenty of engineers - for those who are willing to pay for them. What this guy really wants is to bring boatloads of low paid, semi-indentured Indians and Chinese here instead.
I kind of agree, but if wages were high I would say maybe there is a supply problem, maybe.
This is total rot. I know many engineers who have been unemployed for over a year. If you are laid-off in your 50s, forget about it. You will never find another engineering job, and you may as well get a job at WalMart - they like former engineers because we have a work ethic and won’t steal them blind.
We need to have a merit based immigration system, not a kinship system. And there is no reason why our educational system cannot produce the skills we need. Part of the problem is that bringing in skilled foreign labor depresses wages and makes careers like engineering less attractive.

We do not need to import anyone, for any reason.
Here’s a true recent event regards education and our “shortage” of engineering/tech talent.
A major U.S. corporation with local facilities asked our local university to send them ten Engineering/Tech students for part time on the job training.
The university sent them only the class dullards, who were not really qualified for the positions offered.
You want to keep in mind that the excuse so often stated for our alleged need to import talent is that “They have experience in the field”.
The Corp. was offering U.S. students that experience, and most likely positions with their company on graduation.
Being dissatisfied with the slackers the university sent this corporation asked what would it take to get some of the brighter students into their program?
The university then turned down A BLANK CHECK!
This would have been an ongoing program, the sort of program that would truly inspire engineering/tech students as they would KNOW they had a great job waiting on completion of the program.
Why did the university turn down the money?
Apparently because it would have been designated for a very specific program/purpose, and not available for their pet liberal causes, sports programs, or salaries!
I could get very specific, the only reason I do not is that I expect this scandal will come up in the state legislature after the elections. The same university system will again demand a bigger chunk of state revenue.
This should have become a model program, similar programs are EXACTLY what is needed to revive our higher education system.
Our universities are more interested in their liberal agenda and blaming corporate America for their failures than in actually serving their students or American long term interest.
Well, my point is the supply would increase in response to higher wages. If wages stay level, then supply and demand are in equilibrium.
