I had the opportunity to meet my congressman, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N. C., at the Industrial Opportunities, Inc. (IOI) luncheon for military veterans on 8-26-10. I asked him several questions, including about his voting record.
I asked why, in his four years in office, he has never had a face to face Town Hall meeting with his constituents. I previously tried to get an appointment to see him and called in to his two telephone Townhall meetings last summer, but I guess his call screeners did not like my questions.
My question appeared to upset him and he replied that he was not going to waste his time having a bunch of people yelling at him at Townhall meetings! I said that he appeared more afraid of answering constituents’ questions than he was of defensive linemen. He countered somewhat derisively, “I am not afraid of you!” grabbing my shoulder like a schoolyard bully ex-professional football player.

Well Heath Shuler should be defensive.
These congressmen work for us. They are accountable to us. They are answerable to us. We have every right to know where they stand, and why they voted a certain way. We have every right to know why they don’t have town meetings or arrange meetings with constituents, if those are their office policies.
And if we don’t like what they tell us or what they do, we are free to shop for another candidate and elect someone else. That’s how it works. These people are not entitled to be congressmen or in a leadership position. They are there because we sent them there. And at election time, it’s up to us whether we want to send them back there again.
Nothing a congressman hate more than being questioned,how dare you. /s

This sums up why he should be fired in November.

(He ran in the GOP primary 4 years ago, and his quote was that he was going to “beat Heath Shuler like a rented mule in the general!” Unfortunately he didn’t make it out of the primary....)
