Political Correctness : Disney Style (vanity)

Posted on 09/12/2010 5:51:29 PM PDT by hecht

Recently, my family and I went to Disneyland in California. In the California Adventure Park, we watched the otherwise splendid Alladin musical. What disturbed me was that in the chorus was a disabled actress in an electric wheelchair. She had no speaking roles and while her counterparts danced to the music she simply rolled her cart in circles. Having an autistic child, I am happy to see the handicapped perform. However ( and perhaps I am sensitive) I fid it distasteful to have someone one stage just to have gratuitous , politically correct window dressing. Obviously she couldn't play Jasmine , but if they want to show "how sensitive " Disney is , why not give the handicapped actress a speaking role? Or was their intent to keep her out of the way , but get credit with liberal fascist number crunchers that will claim discrimination if they dont hire the requisite number of disabled. Having obvious tokens does not help the self esteem of the handicapped. It did not make my autistic son feel any better.

Have no idea if it is PC as I was not there nor did I speak to Disney but slightly off topic so sorry.
The sooner we get rid of affirmative action the better.

Next time stay home...Amusement parks are for the easily amused, and are low class tacky joints anyway....

Politically correct nonsense.

IMHO, patrons go to Disney parks to get away from the “real world” and indulge in a world of fantasy.

I see your point to a degree, but this is how I see all of this stuff. “Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.” And your complaint is precisely evidence of that. They finally give in and make sure they give a person who would never have been in a show like that in times past a chance and then you complain because they didn’t give her a bigger or better part??

I try to be sensitive but do you see little people in the NBA or one armed QBs in the NFL? Of course not. Nobody gets on their case, but they expect other areas of entertainment to ensure there is diversity in this area.

Years ago I was in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar. There was a disabled fellow, cerebral palsy or something similar, that was part of a theater group that was participating in the production. They used him to play a crippled man seeking Christ’s healing power. It was very convincing and a very powerful part of the production.

About seven years ago, Kumiyama got hired as a performer in “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” at Disney California Adventure and is believed to be the first and only Disney performer in a wheelchair.

In the show, Kumiyama sings in group scenes, including at a bazaar, using a costumed wheelchair on stage.

“She’s truly an inspiration,” said Kathy Cunningham, company coordinator for the “Aladdin” cast.

Kumiyama didn’t always receive a warm welcome from park visitors. In some Internet chat rooms, some wrote that Disney only hired her to make the company look better. They said she was a distraction.

“I used to get really bitter and felt like I had to prove myself every day,” Kumiyama said. “In the end, I’m going to win, because I deserve to be there (as much as) anyone else in the cast.”

Kumiyama found out that she inspired children and adult in wheelchairs — and that spurred her on.

“My biggest goal is to provide an example to children and young adults so they don’t have to go through the confusion that I went through at their age. Do I choose something to do that’s ‘realistic’ in my situation or … follow my goals and do what I truly want in my heart?” Kumiyama said. “Life is too short to do something you’re not passionate about.”

She has been part of the cast for a few years. I was last there about 3 or 4 years ago and she was part of the show. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Just our of curiosity, when did Spud play? Also, when I said “little people,” I meant it literally. They used to be known as dwarves but we no longer use that term. It is not nice nor PC. Just making my point clear.

P.S. As a Tribe fan, that one about the pitcher really hurt.

The Disney film had lyrics that got changed after complaints from Arab-Americans.

Original:
“Where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face/It’s barbaric, but, hey, it’s home”

changed to

“”Where it’s flat and immense and the heat is intense/It’s barbaric, but, hey, it’s home.” (they didn’t change the
barbaric part or did they)
Wikipedia also said the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee
“criticized the characters’ Anglicized features and Anglo-American accents, in contrast to the other characters in the film, which are dark-skinned, have Arab accents and grotesque facial features, and appear villainous or greedy”

Webb played from '85 to'98.

He was not, however, the shortest to play in the NBA.

Earl Boykins played @ 5ft. 5"" and the shortest ever is Muggsy Bogues @ 5ft. 3".

You must love the movie Major League.

DISNEY/ABC is a POS that has shareholders, joint ventures, deals with Saudis and Islamics like the other 5 out of 6 US.

Wonder why the 24x7 brainwashing on ALL TV networks and channels talks about the *****ng mythical “moderate Islam?” This is in-between the “stupid white man” TV commericals.
