Is the Left Rejecting Its Pagan Base?
The American Thinker ^ | September 23, 2010 | Jan LaRue

Will Christine, the repentant "witch," or Chris, the unrepentant "Marxist," win the U.S. Senate race in Delaware?

Political pundits and TV talkers are fixated on Christine O'Donnell's admission that she "dabbled into witchcraft" very briefly as a teenager. Whereas Chris Coons, O'Donnell's Democratic opponent, is a self-described Marxist, Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid's "pet," and a former "volunteer for liberation theology" in South Africa, according to Jeff Lord's outstanding column on American Spectator.

The leftist cabal is mute about Coons' Marxist meandering while railing against the conservative Christian who trifled with witchcraft as a teenager. I'm shocked, but I'm over it.

Maureen Dowd's New York Times invective against the Tea Party generally, and O'Donnell particularly, says, "She might have gone a broom too far, though, when she once told Bill Maher that she had 'dabbled into witchcraft' and went on a date with a witch that included 'a midnight picnic on a satanic altar.'"

O'Donnell is the "new queen of the wingnuts" and a "crackpot of the first order," according to CNN contributor John Avlon.

Joy Behar, a co-host of ABC's "The View," on September 20 said, "I think it shows you how crazy the girl is, doesn't it? ... How many crazy people do we have to have in office?"

Hopefully not as many crazies as we have on television.

The Washington Post's political blog ignores Coons' affinity for Marxism while focusing on O'Donnell's youthful indiscretion, finding it strange and "surprising," even though she renounced witchcraft years ago and is a practicing Christian.

Once again, the Left's tolerance and diversity mantra rings hollow. Who knew that witches had fallen out of favor with the Left? You have to wonder if it's O'Donnell's dabbling or denunciation that's piqued the pagans. If the Left continues to link witchcraft and paganism to "crazies," Obama could end up on the wrong end of the mystics' magical broom:

"The Washington, D.C. community of magical and spiritual progressives announced in a press release that they would join together, January 19th, at the Jefferson Memorial Plaza 'to sweep the town clean and welcome President-elect Obama and his administration to the White House.'"

Neither The New York Times nor The Washington Post considered it newsworthy that a "triumvirate," including a witch doctor, a Wiccan priestess, and assorted "progressive mystics" celebrated Obama's inauguration by sweeping President George W. Bush out of town with a "Witches' Broom Dance." According to Beliefnet.com,

"Washington Witchdoctor Caroline Kenner, a Pagan shamanic healer and organizer for the Sacred Space Foundation, says, 'Many of us are worried by the ruinous course our country has taken for the last eight years, and we are also concerned for the safety of the Obama and Biden families. This ceremony gives us a chance to request help from our loving ancestors and our multitude of deities, and to bless and protect the incoming administration. We will begin the work by magically sweeping away the detritus of the worst administration in American history with our consecrated Witches' Brooms.'"

Who on the Left sang "Witchy Woman" when former First Lady Hillary Clinton used a medium to conjure up "imaginary" conversations with the late Eleanor Roosevelt in the White House solarium?

"Hillary talks to Dead," CNN reported: Clinton "herself wrote about her imaginary conversations with Eleanor Roosevelt in her June 10 column. 'She said she talked to Roosevelt about the role of a first lady. She usually responds by telling me to buck up, or at least to grow skin as thick as a rhinoceros,' Mrs. Clinton wrote."

Hillary's far-left feminist fans, coalesced under the National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO) umbrella, haven't flown to O'Donnell's defense even though the membership list includes assorted witches and pagans. For example:

The Ariadne Institute for the Study of Myth and Ritual is currently promoting its "Goddess Pilgrimage to Crete." It promises women who take the pilgrimage that they will

"Feel Her power in holy mountains, sense Her mysteries in the darkness of caves, pour out libations of milk and honey on Minoan altars. Contact a sacred energy that will transform the way you feel about women, yourself."

Sporting a leafy crown, perhaps from the "sacred tree," Carol Christ, a Ph.D. from Yale and director of Ariadne, "like Sappho," we're told, "has heard the muses sing. In Crete she discovered the sacred tree in the center of the garden and descended four levels into the darkness of a cave, experiencing personal transformation."

Leave it to a Yale leftist to get enlightened in a cave.

Another NCWO member, The Banyan Tree, Inc., features programs by a "professional Clairvoyant and Medium, Medical Intuitive, Spiritual Healer and Egyptian tarot reader" and "a light Trance Channeler who works in an altered state of consciousness where she connects with her Teachers and Guides on the Other Side."

I'm guessing one of them is the "goddess" on the other side of the cave pretending to be Eleanor Roosevelt.

But alas, O'Donnell won't get the Wiccan vote. According to the Daily Beast website, a Dover, Delaware, spokesman for pagans says,

"No matter how Democrats treat the issue, it seems unlikely that Wiccans will turn out for O'Donnell at the polls. 'Her inability to separate anything non-Christian from Satanic is going to be an issue not just with her potential pagan constituents but with any other non-Christians or Christians of a flavor that does not match hers,' said Michael Smith, the Wiccan IT analyst who hosted the meet-and-greet the governor visited. ... Our current governor came to a meet-and-greet that he knew ahead of time was going to be mostly Wiccan or pagan,' said Dominguez. Questions for Gov. Jack Markell, who was then a candidate in the Democratic primary, were mostly about the environment. 'There were no questions about will you appoint an openly pagan blah blah blah,' said Dominguez. 'At this moment of history, that's not where our community is.'"

Memo to Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer: The Delaware Senate primary is history -- your RINO lost -- get over it. If Coons' embrace of Obama's policies, Marxism, and liberation theology escapes the darkness four levels down in liberal media caves, it's Coons, not O'Donnell, who will have a one-in-ten chance of connecting with the Delaware voting community who know crazy when they see it.
