The Department of Commerce has gone Madison Ave, baby! Yessir, under the Obama Administration we are relatin' 'round here.
I needed to trademark some names and taglines that are becoming quite effective and being emulated, a.k.a., stolen, by competitors. Since I had never trademarked anything before I began my research wanting to hear from the horse's mouth, the Patents & Trademarks Office website.
To my surprise they did not have written instruction. No sir, this is the video generation so our instruction was in the form of videos. To be fair, they did provide transcripts of the videos, requiring some search, which read like a screen play. The instructional value was not nearly so great as the entertainment value, literally a Stephen Colbert comedy format.
The "reporter" interviewed various ones needing trademark services. And wouldn't you know it, the first was a rock band leader. How relevant is that? Did you know that 33.6% of those seeking trademarks are rock bands? (JK) Obama knows how to relate to YOU. In the words of another great Relater, "[he] feels your pain." And he has the comedy act to cheer you up.
The interviews are in the format of a video FAQ with lots of relevant fluff around the answers. I finally left the USPTO.GOV site and found some reference sites that knew what they were talking about and actually communicated it.
I wonder how much more it cost to put on this rather poor comedy performance than the previous USPTO.GOV site that told people what they needed to know? Your tax dollars at work. Obama is relating to YOU!
