AMERICAN Companies Rescue Trapped Chilean Miners

Far be it for an American President to publicly congratulate (let alone even mention) AMERICAN ingenuity and AMERICAN PRIVATE ENTERPRISE for the miracle rescue of the Chilean Miners.

Schramm Inc. of West Chester, Pennsylvania built the drills and equipment used to reach the trapped miners.

Center Rock Company, also from Pennsylvania, built the drill bits used to reach the miners.

UPS, the US shipping company, delivered the 13-ton drilling equipment from Pennsylvania to Chile in less than 48 hours.

Crews from Layne Christensen Company of Wichita Kansas and its subsidiary Geotec Boyles Bros. worked the drills and machinery to locate and reach the miners and then enlarge the holes to ultimately rescue them.

Jeff Hart of Denver Colorado was called off his job drilling water wells for the U.S. Army's forward operating bases in Afghanistan to lead the drilling crew that reached the miners.

Atlas Copco Construction Mining Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin provided consulting on how to make drilling equipment from different sources work together under differing pressure specifications.

Aries Central California Video of Fresno California designed the special cameras that were lowered nearly a mile into the ground sending back video of the miners.

Zephyr Technologies of Annapolis Maryland, made the remote monitors of vital signs that miners will wear during their ascent.

NASA Engineers designed the "Phoenix" capsule that miners would be brought to the surface in, and provided medical consulting, special diets and spandex suits to maintain miners' blood pressure as they're brought back to the surface.

Oh, and Candadian-based Precision Drilling Corp. and South-African company Murray & Roberts, drilled a backup rescue shafts in case the American rig failed. Which it didn't.

10:01 AM EST In a different day and age, Jeff Hart would be the most famous American in our country right now. He would be honored at the White House. Schoolchildren would learn of his skill and heroism.

But because Jeff Hart works in an industry under fire by the Obama administration, more people in Chile will celebrate this symbol of American greatness than in America itself.

Jeff Hart is a driller based in my home state of Colorado. The father of two has been drilling water wells in Afghanistan at U.S. Army bases. When the San Jose Mine in Chile collapsed in August, he flew to lend his renowned expertise to the rescue effort. As part of an amazing three-way race to the trapped miners, Hart drilled for 33 days straight and was first to reach the caved-in workers.

The AP recounts the story — and what strikes me again and again is how the world turned to American ingenuity and American fortitude and American equipment and American enterprise to get the job done:

All the technology in the world is meaningless without people. First and foremost, what kept those men alive was the leadership of their foreman, Luis Urzua.

The shift supervisor undoubtedly made use of emergency preparedness training he'd gotten over the years that'd been developed by American miners.

He provided his own quick wit and sense of command and used absolutely everything he'd ever learned.

That is truly heroic.

He had confidence that SOMEBODY could drill a hole and get them out of there hence the 17 day long period of iron discipline.

He was right!

I liked the Chilean President's speech to the man ~ a whole speech addressed to a single individual ~ You don't see that often anywhere.

A friend of mine was once trapped in a cave in Southern Indiana for about a week. It'd rained a lot, the water rose, and he got cut off. People knew he was in there but could do nothing. He said he met angles, and Satan, and Jesus, and others, and he was without any kind of light for most of the time. He ended up starting college a couple of years late as a consequence of that event ~ but, he survived, and that was but a week. Imagine 17 days ~ 1/2 mile underground in solid rock. Someone gave you the right boss.

I heard the Chilean Pres. naming the pres/leaders of other countries that he’d spoken to in S. America and Europe, and I don’t recall him saying that he spoke with Obama. Though he did thank the U.S.A. for all our help

I heard some idiot reporter form the LA Times on local (Baltimore) radio today. He siad the Chilean Government did an incredible job drilling and designing the rescue system.

He was so stupid and uneducated that he also said that as soon as the miners came up, they took them to something they called Triage. But he mispronounced it try-age.

I’m disgusted. Bambi hates Chile, the most capitalist and educated country in Latin America, and was only forced into offering aid several days after their major earthquakes earliet this year. IIRC, Chile said thanks but no thanks to the aid.

We should be making a big deal of this. It was American technology, but paid for by the Chilean government and Obama had nothing to do with it. Still, if Bambi were an American (which he is not) he’d be out there seriously promoting this rescue and every single person involved in it.

I had gone out for dinner and was sitting in a bar here when I saw the final miner come out, and everybody in the bar cheered.

This sounds like the underground version of the Shackleton expedition to the South Pole during WWI!

Shackleton and a few of his strongest men went far across the southern sea to find rescue help. But a great deal of credit goes to Frank Wild, who kept morale and spirits up on desolate Elephant Island. To the remaining men he would say daily, "any day now" they should get ready, the rescue ship would return. And return it did, with not a man lost.

Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing, is an incredible book. I would not be at all surprised to learn the shift supervisor had read it.

Don't you suspect the shift boss had read EVERYTHING ~ those guys go down in a mine like that and stay for days.

BTW, on the safety manuals, I want to be this guy's ghost writer ~ but we'll use him as the source of how to ACT FAST, which he did.

He obviously treated it as a combat situation and did it all. I particularly liked the part where he had them organized into teams and everybody was assigned a job right there at the start. Every man was given the opportunity to see to his own salvation through work with his friends, neighbors and coworkers ~ no matter how hopeless their situation really was, they were working to save their lives.

That's the main thrust that'd make a good chapter, but I think it could permeate whole book and make some of the least interesting stuff RIVETING.

The shift boss’s discipline in crisis is similar to how Shackleton organized his men when they were marooned at the South Pole — he kept them organized and busy, and responsible for their individual and collective welfare. It was military discipline imposed on a catastrophic situation, and it worked.

Had this been stateside, Obama would have assembled a blue-ribbon commission of Ivy League intellectuals to study the problem. Their initial recommendation would have been to immediately halt all drilling of water wells, etc. in the continental US until additional government-mandated safety measures were in place.

Yep. He showed superb judgment in not letting national pride get in the way of getting the men out. He assessed the situation and made the choices to get the job done. That’s leadership. I would say we should pull a switcheroo—grab him and throw him in the White House—but then the good people of Chile would be stuck with our self-inflicted national gangrene, and that just wouldn’t be right. Oh well, we can start cutting away at it on 11/02.

Piñera just put on quite a display of what real executive leadership can accomplish, quickly bringing the best people and tools together to get a difficult job done. Very impressive.

If Obama had been Chile's president, those miners would have died. Obama would then have exploited their deaths for political gain. "Never let a crisis go to waste."

Noticed that also....The President of Chile had mentioned the gratitude to the American people and their support earlier in the day...as Shep said “made my heart swell” ...but no mention of talking to BO.....He was probably on the golf course and couldn’t work it into his schedule....Sort of like the gulf oil crisis.
