Norah Grossly Understates NPR's Fed Funding
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 10/22/2010 7:22:27 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Trying to downplay calls--in reaction to the Juan Williams firing fiasco--for the federal defunding of NPR as mere right-wing electoral politics and "cable catnip," Norah O'Donnell has grossly understated the proportion of its budget that NPR obtains from the feds.

Aided and abetted by Chuck Todd, Norah offered her misleading math on today's Daily Rundown on MSNBC. O'Donnell claimed that only 1-3% of NPR's budget is derived from federal funding. But as you'll see, the real number is at least double that.

Remember that in some cities there are local and state funds for NPR and PBS stations. They also get grants and stuff. The real number is probably closer to a fifth.

Well, then it won't hurt if the funding is cut off.

Let the ax fall.

Ok, so she’s making the case for defunding them, since it’s such a small percentage.....

Yes, but doesn’t the Gov’t fed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting at 100%??

And the CPB also distributes funds to NPR, no?

The key should be to eliminate the CPB (and the National Endowment for the Arts also)

If NPR’s funding from the government is so small of a % of it's operating budget, then they shouldn't have any problem getting by without the government check.

We need to get government out of the media—COMPLETELY! It is a brainwashing tool for their vile Cultural Marxist agenda. It is destroying the morals and families of this nation...intentionally. We have to end the government brainwashing. They twist the TRUTH. The truth never needs government subsidies. They want to destroy the natural family to make us dependent on mommy government. We are committing suicide by allowing government to brainwash us not only in our MEDIA but our children in “govment” schools.

3%??

I understood it to be much higher than that.

Because of the way they launder money through their affiliates which are government supported and through "franchise" fees, I would put it at 20-30%.

According to NPR's own pie chart, it's zero.

The most delicious moment for me happened on Morning Joe with Eugene Robinson. The man was so torn, it was delightful.

First, he tepidly acknowledged that NPR had gone too far, and was sort of wrong. But it was killing him because he loves NPR.

Next, he had to condemn NPR for firing one of only 2 black voices they had. This really got Eugene twisted, because he so dearly wanted to play the race card, but for Juan Williams?! To poor old Eugene, Juan Williams is a step away from being Rush Limbaugh. To the left, Juan Williams is the conservative voice of NPR.

So, there’s Eugene Robinson, loaded for bear, all the ammo he needs, but just doesn’t want to take the shot.

It was entertaining.

It is an outrage that the American people are forced to fund this government propaganda arm of the Socialist Democrat party. It needs to be stopped.

Why would anyone want to listen to Gov’t funded radio anyway? Any one with an functioning brain cell would conclude that they will promote the position of their sponsor, the Gov’t. Just as they will promote the interests of their far-left financiers i.e. George Soros.

What Sarah Palin should have said is that Congress should defund (i) NPR and (ii) any public radio station that pays any money to NPR. *That* would make NPR change its tune mighty fast.

Not only do they pay no taxes, they compete with small businesses that do.

In many cities they provide studios and editing services. They have put any number of editors and production companies out of business because they pay no taxes on their profits.

BTW - I'm old enough to remember when public TV had NO commercials. If they're raking in money from advertisers, why should they also be getting taxpayer money?
