So now what?
Thats what Republicansand their vanquished opponentsare asking in the wake of 2010s midterm Democratic debacle. Does 2010 foretell similar results in 2012? Can Democrats right themselves? Will an ascendant GOP stumble?
What does history tell us about what will transpire two Novembers from now?
The party in power generally loses seats in off year contests. Rarely (think 1934) the party in power may witness a pickup. Draws are also possible, with no appreciable gain or loss for anybody. But measurable losses for ins remain the norm. The modern Democratic Party-Republican Party Era (no Whigs. Federalists, Democratic-Republicans, or No-Nothings need apply), has witnessed any number of midterm tussles1862, 1882, 1914, 1922, 1938, 1942, 1950, 1954, 1978, and 1982, for examplefalling into the category not of repudiations but, rather of mere rebukes. The party in power takes a solid shot to the jaw but is shaken rather than dropped to the canvas.

Obama has a lot more problems then this article has stated. Two major ones are named Pelosi & Reid!!! The combo of Obama, Pelosi and Reid will lead to the near destruction of the Democrat Party in 2012!!! No more need be said, other then Democrats can remedy this problem very quickly. Guess how?
“Rarely (think 1934) the party in power may witness a pickup”
2002 saw the GOP gain seats in Congress and the Senate I believe.
It is the case that very few elected Presidents are not reelected. I think only two (Carter and Bush I... Ford was not elected to begin with, so he doesn’t count) in the last eighty-leven years or so.
Obummer is nothing like Truman and Clinton. And he’s operating in a politically toxic environment whereas they operated in politically propitious ones. He has shown no clue as to how to turn the economy around except to spend more. For Obummer, his teleprompter has indeed met the end of the road.
Republicans need to keep Pelosi’s face on TV so more people will become sick of it.
Minority leader ? Have at it, Nancy !
That is a powerful coalition of obstacles to overcome. The writing may finally be upon the teleprompter wall.
I like how he ends it.
Interesting observation, but if we look at the 20th and 21st centuries we see (surprisingly) that really most are not re-elected:
Defeated or not seeking re-election: TR, Taft, Coolidge, Hoover, Truman, LBJ, Carter, George H. W. Bush
Re-elected: Wilson, FDR, Ike, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, George W. Bush. (and both Wilson and Clinton are elected only by pluralities in both terms)
Died: Harding, JFK
Not elected & not “re”-elected: Ford
Funny, but in error. He has had to make a comeback once.
He did try to run for congress once (the seat of Bobby Rush), it was the only time, he ever really fought a democrat.
He lost, and was damaged by it, but regrouped, became more corrupt then ever, and continued on.
To me, we need to look at what lessons he learned from his 2000 loss (this recent midterm is like a loss for him, so he is going to go back to his past experience).
To me, it looks like he actually became more orthodox and liberally dogmatic, while developing his style, and also become more corrupt and insidious in the process. Some lessons he learned, never, ever oppose his own party, or the liberal establishment. Never deviate from the power brokers of the left, and never challenge anything or anyone on the left. Never get outflanked by anyone on your left, and always, bow know before your left wing power structure, and do as it tells you, and you will be rewarded...
Two things he is not, pragmatic or idealistic.....that makes him more dangerous....
The writer is ill informed. Bush made gains in ‘02 midterms. This article is nonsense. There are no historical comparisons to the times we live in now. Rats who think that this past election was just the normal midterm losing cycle are in for a rude awakening in ‘12. There is no way the Dims will recover from this last rout any time soon. Generations of Rat leaders were fired Nov 2nd from state houses nation wide. Whats left are scared out of their minds.
The past 2 years have blown away all illusion covering this Marxist Muzzie quisling and what has been seen cannot be unseen.
Nothing will re-elect him........
Not good enough. Need to push it over the edge. But how?
Most importantly, the “extend and pretend” policy of the administration guarantees that the foreclosure crisis remains in effect for at least two more years.
Until the foreclosure pipeline is cleared out of the housing market there is zero chance of a significant recovery.
Quit looking to history to see our reaction to our first Marxist, muslim, foreign President. Did the Russians look at history in figuring out the reaction to Lenin? There was no precedent. This isn’t Democrat liberalism vs. Republican fiscal restraint. This is America’s founding people and those who have assimilated to America versus global anti-American tyranny designed to make us obedient slaves.
