Libertarianism as a party was hard to accept, as it took the concept of individual liberty and held such a hard line on it, that it kept getting sidetracked into backing positions that most people would find ridiculous.
Plus, it came to be associated with social behaviors at the expense of the far far more important economic liberty issues, to the point where flat out commies like Bill Maher call themselves libertarian, presumably because they think weed should be taxed, not criminalization.
Believe it not, tho, the pro-life movement is far more libertarian on economic matters than I think your average conservative is...

Right there are strong libertarian-minded Christians, for example, with free market values.
