Mystery missile launch': Chinese missile test or airline contrail?

Hosted by imgur.comA report posted today at a CNN website claims the "mystery missile launch" on Monday was actually a Chinese missile test. According to the report:

China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR’s intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia.

However, the report - placed on CNN's user-generated iReport site - has yet to be vetted or confirmed by CNN, and is full of un-named, unquoted sources. The only link provided goes to a site with basically the same report - again, with no corroboration.

The source of the report is one Wayne Madsen, who once claimed Wikileaks was a CIA operation, and that Al-Qaeda was a front for the military-industrial complex.

No other news organization is reporting the incident as part of a Chinese missile test at this time.

A much less sinister explanation is provided by a site called "Contrail Science".

According to a report at that site, the CBS camera crew probably captured Flight AWE808 from Hawaii to Phoenix, and the perspective of the the viewer made the contrail appear to be a ballistic missile being launched, possibly, from a submarine.

The site reports a very similar incident:

An interesting contrail cropped up off the coast of San Clemente, Orange County, California on December 31st 2009. The curious shape led.......

Absolute nonsense. No Chinese or anyone else’s sub could ever get that close to our shore, much less launch a missile.

IF... if it was an airplane, how many airplanes were up in the air at that same time WITHOUT leaving a contrail? That is the BUSIEST airspace in the world. 4 major airports.

I still vote contrail. The simplest solution is usually correct.

Yep. If the government wanted to cover it up, there would be no better way than simply claiming to have launched it themselves.

Now conspiracy theorists' posts on some blogsite are news sources and worthy of their own article.

We've really turned a corner, haven't we?

This "Chinese Missile" event has become a Rorschach Test.

I see it all the time. The jets at higher altitudes leave long contrails and those heading in to land at detroit leave short ones.

We never had definitive proof that the December 31st 2009 launch was a plane or missile. All we got is some ridiculous blog page that contains perspective trickery and unverified alternative images of that event that are obviously not the same event. This new report on CNN appears to be from one of the lefty loons. That is the typical Government Disinformation outlet. At least we now know that they are concerned enough to try to lump all the 'its a missile folks crowd' into the lunatic fringe. Typical Government disinfo tactics.

To repost a comment I made on another thread:

Let’s go through the evidence.

First, we do *not* have the U.S. Government reacting in a panic. A fleet of anti-submarine airplanes did *not* race out of San Diego to the potential launch site. The aircraft carrier helping the cruise ship did *not* divert to race to the area. Obama/Biden were *not* whisked away to safety.

Does this behaviour match an unannounced missile launch by an unknown party, or does it match an optical illusion?

Second, we do *not* have anyone gloating nor complaining about it. We do *not* have Russia angrily reminding us that ICBM launches must by treaty be announced in advance. We do *not* have Chinese news stations proudly announcing a successful test.

Does this behaviour match a missile launch within sight of US land, or does it match an optical illusion?

Third, we do *not* have any indication at all of where the hypothetical missle landed. We do *not* have amateur astronomers reporting “meteor” sightings along the possible track nor announcing a new satellite. We do *not* have reports of unexplained radar sightings. We do *not* have a recovery team scouring the area (any area) where it might have landed.

Does this behaviour match a missile launch which must come down somewhere, or does this behaviour match an optical illusion?

Fourth, we have testimony. NORAD claims it did not detect a missile launch. The FAA says its radar tracks don’t show any unexplained fast-moving objects. The pentagon says none of our forces launched anything and whatever it is isn’t a threat to us. The entire US military has the attitude of “Huh? I don’t show anything, do you?”.

Does this behaviour match a missile launch (possible cover story: “Routine test, nothing to be alarmed about”) or does it match an optical illusion?

Against this, we have a video of an pre-existing contrail. It’s hard to judge the speed of the object creating the contrail — it looks to me like the camera is jittering from the helicopter, and the actual object isn’t moving that quickly.

In short, now that more evidence has come forward, I consider the chance of this being a missile launch about as high as the chance that the mainstream media will announce the religion of the next terrorist.

Its possible to get past SOSUS, if they have inside information, they have the expertise to cloak a sub with “biologicals” noise, in effect make it sound like a whale.

In reality if it had happened we would have seen a pretty hard and fast response by our Naval resources, which did NOT happen.

I am thinking that we shot off something that was aimed at something else, possibly a satellite in a degraded and dangerous re-entry path, maybe an obsolete bird with plutonium aboard, or an old spy bird.

A good conspiracy theory must have a healthy does of plausibility and I must say this one has it in spades. IF the Chinese military wanted to do such a thing, the timing was perfect; the G20 meeting was about to convene and Obama was out of the country in contact with lots of foreigners (no need to make NSA privy to the communication). Who is to say that someone did not approach him with a special message saying "Mr. President, in 15 minutes the following is going to happen and if your military intervenes or attempts to prosecute an attack on our platform after the fact, we will repeat the launch but this time towards Los Angeles." What better way to do it? Imagine if you were given the assignment to come up with a recommendation on how to demonstrate to the President just who was boss here. Body language notwithstanding. Tom Clancy could do no better.

Contrail? After reflection (npi), probably although I want to watch the next few KSC launches really, really carefully. And if so, I'll bet the Chinese are saying "D'oh, why didn't we think of that???"

I beg to differ I think it would be real easy

I am still on the fence as to what it was, but i thought this would add some to the discussion. I am looking for the experts here to convince me one way or the other.

Right. Then the Chinese upload a detailed youtube video of their launch. And the US stock market crashes the next day.

Well, it is kind of easy to believe that aggressor nations would be encouraged after watching "President Doormat" the past two years...
