The Tea Party Targets... Sustainable Development?
Mother Jones ^ | 11/18/2010 | Stephanie Mencimer

First, they took on the political establishment in Congress. Now, tea partiers have trained their sights on a new and insidious target: local planning and zoning commissions, which activists believe are carrying out a global conspiracy to trample American liberties and force citizens into Orwellian "human habitation zones."

At the root of this plot is the admittedly sinister-sounding Agenda 21, an 18-year-old UN plan to encourage countries to consider the environmental impacts of human development. Tea partiers see Agenda 21 behind everything from a septic tank inspection law in Florida to a plan in Maine to reduce traffic on Route 1. The issue even flared up briefly during the midterms, when Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes accused his Democratic opponent of using a bike-sharing program to convert Denver into a "United Nations Community." In the tea partiers’ dystopian vision, the increased density favored by planners to allow for better mass transit becomes compulsory "human habitation zones."

Agenda 21 paranoia has swept the tea party scene, driving activists around the country to delve into the minutiae of local governance. And now that the midterm elections are over, they're descending on planning meetings and transit debates, wielding PowerPoints about Agenda 21, and generally freaking out low-level bureaucrats with accusations about their roles in a supposed international conspiracy.

First off, yes we are coming to stop this crap. When one of us "nutjobs" posts about Agenda 21 it is almost always filled with references to their own documentation. When hitpieces like this come out they are always devoid of facts and full of dismissive opinion. Not one link in this entire piece showing exactly what language might be "freaking people out". We must be winning this war too.

The Tea Party is 100% Pro-”Sustainable Development”. It’s just that we consider “Sustainable Development” as things like running a business without requiring government largesse to stay solvent, or not going into debt to buy your big screen TV.

Green energy sources that cost 10 times as much and can only succeed through subsidy and/or government mandate are not “sustainable” at all. FUMJ.

Why does the author think that it is ok for local governments to follow United Nations dictates? Why does the author think that the TEA party movement should only be restricted to federal government?

I want to know more. Put me on your ping list.

A direct correlation can be drawn between sustainable development communities and driving minorities out with housing that is priced out of reach.

Sustainable development is racist.

Environmentalists in the US refuse to address immigration, and it’s effects on Urban planning and nature conservation.

Until they do so they are hypocrits of the greatest degree, and is just another reason they shouldn’t be taken serious when it comes to public policy.

If the USA switched to a zero immigration policy and a Jus Sanguine citizenship requirement today, the environment of the United States would be sustainable as is for several hundred years.

IF we continue on the course of unfettered immigration and jus soli citizenship, the United States will have 600 Million citizens within 120 years and vast tracts of natural wonders will be forever gone with no benefit to the descendants of the current citizens of this country.
