Pistol-Packin' Mama Grizzly

It’s official. I’m now permitted by the great state of Massachusetts to purchase and carry firearms.

It was not that arduous a journey, actually; I expected much worse. About a month before Gerry’s post about being shot at, I had completed the certification course required by Massachusetts in order to be allowed to apply for permission to buy a gun.

The course itself was hugely educational (as was, I’m sure, at least part of the point). It cost me $100 for a day of classroom course work and a day at the shooting range to qualify. The instructor, Mike, was an ex-military guy who was willing to spend as long as it took to make sure my classmate and I understood absolutely everything there was to know about guns and their history, from the invention of gunpowder to the present...

EAA offers a very fine .357 snubby with rubber grip for a very reasonable price (search 'Windicator'). Load it with .38 Spcl +P hollowpoints for personal defense. Practice with .38 spcl rounds.

I have found the earlier Phoenix Arms .22lr semi-autos, 10 round magazine, to be very reliable and quite accurate. You can put the five inch barrel on for target practice and carry it with a three inch barrel. Either way it is a tack driver and reliable, in my experience. Buy the pistol for under $150 and order a five inch barrel and extra mag with finger hold for under fifty. Great little guns in stainless or blued (I recommend the blued in the newer models).

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. Since the Beretta Neos is a non-starter here in MA, I’m now leaning toward the Walther P22 as a “starter” and then will probably upgrade to a 9mm of some sort.

But as I’m still a neophyte at this, I want to start with something I know I can handle, and really learn how it works in a practical way. Also, I have a very small hand, even for a woman, so the smaller guns are virtually a necessity for me...

Congratulations. Now stay out of Costco, especially in Las Vegas.

A Walther PPS, with the small backstrap on it might just fit your hand perfectly,

Also, something like the Ruger LCP is very small gripwise. And super concealable for down the line when you get a carry permit. .380 ammo is still sometimes scarce, at least around here.
