High School Football Player Gets Penalized For Pointing To God

Occasionally we come across a story like this and the injustice can only make you sit back, shake your head, and wonder what we are coming to. A extraordinary young man, Ronnie Hastie, who plays high school football in Spokane, Oregon, always makes it a habit after scoring a touchdown to quickly kneel in the end zone and point to God – in an effort to give him the credit for the score and for his talent.

In this particular game, after a 23 yard touchdown, he took 1-2 seconds to do what he’s always done traditional…quickly kneel and point to God. But this time, the ref didn’t appreciate it and threw a penalty flag directly at his chest- docking the team 15 yards. KOMO-4 writes:

"Hastie said he’s pointed up as a gesture to God after every touchdown he’s scored in every game and never had a problem before.

“It’s usually one or two seconds long,” he said. “It’s something I’ve done as a tradition.”

Hastie said he asked the ref why he was penalized, and the ref responded that Hastie wasn’t supposed to draw attention to himself.

“That wasn’t the point (of the gesture), so I guess I was a little confused,” Hastie said. “I do that to give glory to my heavenly father, Jesus. He gives me the strength. He’s the one who gives me these abilities in the first place.”

Hastie’s father said his son points skyward in an effort to recognize something more important, actually trying to draw attention away from himself.'

It wasn’t flagrant, it wasn’t drawn out, and it sets a great example to young people everywhere. My opinion? Political correctness needs to die a slow, painful death.

You stated that in the body of your text, but you claim authorship in your header. Also, the link in you text leads to your blog - not the video.

Here's how this works.

A blogger posts something from their blog with commentary by them (that is why they claim authorship) and also mention a video that goes along with it for substantiation.

The video isn't the whole story, just part of it.

To claim that a blogger claims authorship for everything in an article they publish here is a straw man argument.

If you really have a deep issue with this, I suggest you check out the news forum as you will find hundreds of similar practices by many news sources.

I remember you FreeperBeaters complaining that bloggers didn't post excerpts of their articles, but just a link.

Tthen when they started posting excerpts you all complained about that.

Now this blogger has posted the whole article from the blog, and still the obsession goes on.

I don't see anything out of line with the posting of this thread.

God didn’t enable this kid to score a touchdown anymore than he disabled the other kid causing him to miss the tackle allowing the winning touchdown.

There is a strong competitive advantage believing that God is helping you, in life, sports, and warfare. Whether God does intervene hasn't been scientifically proven, however the advantage itself has been proven beyond a doubt. Publicly displaying gratitude to God is part of that advantage, if anything psyching out the opposing team. As a valid tactic in tribal warfare and practice tribal warfare, winners have included religious acts including public displays of gratidude for thousands of years. They shouldn't stop now just because it causes envy and hurts losers feelings.

Actually, that's not quite accurate.

The complaint is that they needlessly excerpt blog posts in order to get hits.

There are two species of blogpimps, the excerpters and the vidpimps.

I know, it can seem confusing but there is indeed a method to the madness.

This is football, not Nazi Germany.

This is a referee. You don’t want the burden on him to enforce only some of the rules. He will just get even more flack about which rules he chooses to enforce and which rules he chooses to ignore.

If you don’t agree with the rule, fine, but don’t bitch at the ref, bitch at the rule.

Yes it is or I wouldn't have stated it.

The complaint is that they needlessly excerpt blog posts in order to get hits.

Yes, I remember that complaint also.

I notice that their writings are copyrighted so it may be best that they excerpt like many other news sites.

Over a year ago I noticed a poster here at FR always posting videos on their blog with nothing noted about them with a link to their site where it was imbedded.

No, I didn't like that either.

If I was interested in the video, I would click on "watch on you tube" link and watch it there.

This poster has posted the entire article and incorporated the video in the story.

As I told shambooie (sorry I don't want to look up the name), a blogger putting their name in as author means they are the author of the words.

Not the video silly!

This poster used a link labeled “video” which leads to the embedded vid on the blog.

She has incorporated the video as part of the blog post and requires
that you pay her a “hit” to view it. Seems a lot like claiming ownership to me.

The fact that these vidpimps get so bent out of shape when someone
posts the direct link on the thread speaks far more eloquently than
I ever could about their true intentions.. to USE FR as an advertising
platform for their blogs. And that gets ME bent out of shape.

Besides, in order to qualify as “Quixotic” I have to tilt at a windmill or two.

Your post is fraudulent. Your link that claims to be the video is actually a link to your blog. I clicked on the link that says “Video” and was directed to a shady site.

So? Happens all the time in the news forum.

She posted her article which she claimed authorship for.

She didn't say, "Hay, look at the video I made!"

The fact that these vidpimps get so bent out of shape...

LOLOL! Har, it's the FreeperBeaters that need to put on their big boy panties!

to USE FR as an advertising platform for their blogs

That's quite a stretch.

Check the news forum.

And that gets ME bent out of shape.

Maybe you should work out...

Hay, what is this...a quatrain??

Enforcing the rules is his job. Change the rules.

My guess is the rule has an exception for religious displays.

I can remember hearing Vince Dooley (former UGA head coach, and Georgia athletic director at the time) discussing NCAA rule changes to end-zone displays/celebrations that he had been involved in writing. He said they had knowingly created an exception for religious displays, because state schools (like the University of Georgia) were prohibited from limiting any student’s religous expression—even on the football field.

The ref probably either didn’t recognize it as a religous display, or didn’t correctly understand the rule.

Thought it was time for a rerun:
He isn’t everyone’s favorite guy. Yes, he has a small handful of loyal disciples who follow him like fleas on a mangy dog . If you do not bother him then he will scratch your back and tickle you pink. If you do anything he does not approve of such as posting something from a blog, he will jump on you like a cheap prostitute.

Stories are abound as to humblegunner’s problem with blogs. Psychologists suggest something tragic must have happened in order to trigger such an emotional disorder he displays almost daily. Most officials believe that happened when he attempted to sign up for Blogger, but failed to complete the CAPTCHA (you know, the annoying letter challenge response test to make sure you are a real person). Programmers have not experienced many users who fall below the IQ level to complete the challenge, but they have been working on a solution so that everyone, including those with sub 100 IQs can complete the test.

So who is this challenged man that blesses Free Republic so? While we may never know for sure, I have it on good authority that he may be a SHE. Watch her in this video where she expresses the same emotional problems to her local citizens, fellow council members, and even the mayor!

What's his position? Notre Dame is a Catholic university and the majority of the faculty are Catholic and understand the nature of the religion. The Fighting Irish outperform most secular teams. What's your explanation?

Check the news forum.

Ah, the good old news forum... where actual sources are credited.

LOLOL! Har, it's the FreeperBeaters that need to put on their big boy panties!

If those are anything like Romney's magic underpants, I'll pass.

Hay, what is this...a quatrain??

Crazy Train.

She didn't say, "Hay, look at the video I made!"

Oh, yes. Listed herself as author. Theft. Rip-off. Misappropriation. Shady behavior. Plagiarism.

It's methodology that is the problem.
