(CNSNews.com) - American journalism is in "grave peril," FCC Commissioner Michael Copps says, and to bolster "traditional media," he said the Federal Communications Commission should conduct a "public value test" of every commercial broadcast station at relicensing time.
In a speech at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York on Thursday, Copps also said station relicensing should happen every four years instead of the current eight.
"If a station passes the Public Value Test, it of course keeps the license it has earned to use the peoples airwaves," Copps said. "If not, it goes on probation for a year, renewable for an additional year if it demonstrates measurable progress. If the station fails again, give the license to someone who will use it to serve the public interest."

It is a simple fact that there is more news available now than in the supposed glory days of Walter Cronkite, who - I like to point out - didn’t even have a college degree. Whatthis guy is saying is that there’s too much news and opinion coming out that he wishes wasn’t coming out.
“Close the FCC”
Absolutely agree...they are just another tool of this Socialist/Communist regime....like the EPA, Dept of Education, and etc...
The whole premise of the FCC is absurd. The people determine public value through the mechanism of economics. It's a much better measure than any arbitrary judgements made by bureaucrats.
NOAA weather radio has more public value than any NPR station—and higher ratings.
Wow- they’re serious, aren’t they?
Well guess what- so are we.
There are still some Aremericans here Mr. FCC and you WILL hear our voices if you try this crap.
With the help of the mainstream networks and newspapers, the Dems have tried to ridicule it's content and marginalize it's influence. When none of that worked, they tried financing their own network...only problem was no one wanted to listen.
I've been a talk radio fan most of my life, and witnessing it's maturity has been fascinating. It's influence on the political discussion has only increased as the traditional media outlets continue to flounder.
The demise of the so-called fairness doctrine unleashed the voice of the political opposition which had become defined by Woodward/Bernstein activist style journalism school graduates. Their monopoly allowed them to define conservatism. They made us out to be cartoon characters and Reagan as our lovable actor (dunce) leader.
I'll bet if you went back to the early years of Rush and searched transcripts of his show, you would find the most repeated phrase was something like, "Finally, someone in the media is saying what I think!"
The free market has determined that without government subsidies and tax-shelter endowments, liberal radio can barely survive.
Meanwhile, the list of successful conservative talk shows that not only have an audience, but, in spite of unrelenting sponsorship boycotts, create profits, continues to grow.
The Dems lay awake at night plotting ways to "Hush Rush". Obama would regain his deity status among the "professional left" if he could assert control over media content.
Every time the Dems lose elections...it's a "message" problem, not a policy problem.
based on whose value system??
If it is the lefts we will have kiddie porn being called educational television.
This is nothing more than a radical calling for political repression.
I think we can all agree that We The People will not live in a police state.
The FCC already has a “local community” programming requirement.
When he decries the state of JOURNALISM, there is no journalist requirement from our media (does the classic rock or country station HAVE to cover news?).
He is attacking those who would attack Obamabi, the boy king.
Agree with your post, one thing to add to it is the general public’s REJECTION of the increasing agitprop “journalism” from the daily newspapers, news magazines, and television news.
The public is tuning out. No longer subscribing.
Even leftists would rather turn to Comedy Central for their daily news intake (no big-pharma “news items on a breaking discovery in...”, no “if it bleeds it leads” police blotter and car accident reports...).
The press WAS biased. But time was they could at least be shamed into admitting to “falling for a hoax” (or helping to fabricate it altogether) unlike the AP/CBS handling of Memogate (the forged Bush national guards memos, every forgot about AP’s own hand in the matter, Dan Rather wanted to beat AP to breaking the news item).
Isnt that kind of out of rheir realm..its for sure they are not going after porno sites
Barack Obama, then in his Office of the President Elect, said it would no longer be The White House, but THE PEOPLE’S HOUSE.
Kinda like the People’s Republic of China.
Communists like to claim “the People’s” mantle.
I was in radio at one time also. Lots of work, little pay, too much FCC.
Who hires these idiots?
That what I thinking I have feeling what Animal House Dean he probably running the FCC RIGHT NOW LOL!
All we is Nedimeyer character snoop around LOL!
We all know he was brown nosed LOL!
I already passed the Pubic Value Test. Apparently my pubes are valuable as they protect my Junk.
Well then, let's roll.
Once again, net neutrality couldn’t get through congress so we go around them and have an agency of faceless bureaucrats pass it instead. Congress has once again proven it has no public value so let’s pull their funding. </s>
These last elections mean nothing to these statists. It just pushes them to the realization that the masses in their view are stupid and must be controlled. Obama has the veto and they still hold the senate. By 2012 hey will have everything n place to ignore all elections and “fix” them where they deem necessary. I fear we are headed to a civil war and the train long ago has left the station.
Whatever they say it means. Ask people like hitler, mussolini, stalin, mao, fidel. They all had/have value tests. It’s the phraseology of tyrants..
