Giant Crater Found [in Antarctica]: Tied to Worst Mass Extinction Ever [Permo-Triassic]

“An apparent crater as big as Ohio has been found in Antarctica. Scientists think it was carved by a space rock that caused the greatest mass extinction on Earth, 250 million years ago.”

“The crater, buried beneath a half-mile of ice and discovered by some serious airborne and satellite sleuthing, is more than twice as big as the one involved in the demise of the dinosaurs.”

“The crater’s location, in the Wilkes Land region of East Antarctica, south of Australia, suggests it might have instigated the breakup of the so-called Gondwana supercontinent, which pushed Australia northward, the researchers said.”

“This Wilkes Land impact is much bigger than the impact that killed the dinosaurs, and probably would have caused catastrophic damage at the time,” said Ralph von Frese, a professor of geological sciences at Ohio State University.”

“The crater is about 300 miles wide. It was found by looking at differences in density that show up in gravity measurements taken with NASA’s GRACE satellites. Researchers spotted a mass concentration, which they call a mascon—dense stuff that welled up from the mantle, likely in an impact. “

Have a heart! Personally I like the part about the Mayans off the coast of Chili. ;)

Well, yes it would have been, if only pants had been invented by then.

Legend has it that pants were invented 3 days before the impact, with all the crapping of pants going on due to impact, pants were forgotten about for another 3000 years.......There ;^)

Sounds like Velikovsky’s “Worlds In Collision”

mdraghici, despite the conservative tone of this website FR is very pro-Darwinism. Several cutting edge science types got banned here a few years ago just for posting anything anti-Darwin and pro-Velikovsky.

.
Zuben, it takes 25,000 years to make one ‘wobble.’

There are many secular libertarians here; there are many secular conservatives here.

The above all suffer cognitive dissonance when it comes to the issue of right and wrong.

If we are all random molecular self-aware beings, what is your point? There would seem to me to be no point.

Worse, you have a group of four planets with the same 23 - 26 degree tilt i.e. Earth, Saturn, Venus, and one other which no impact would cause. What appears to be the case is that our system is a composite system, i.e. a larger system including the sun appears to have captured a smaller one.

And another thing to remember,

Uranus spins sideways.

Also, those that assert that there is no objective truth, or more especially, no objective morality,

cannot and do not live consistently with that belief. When someone “wrongs” them, they get offended, and they should not, because it might be “moral” in the mind of the offender to do just what he did, and since there is no objective standard, the other person’s “morality” is just as valid, being an individual opinion, as the person being offended.

But, they don’t live that way.

Here’s a question for those that believe this “impact caused axial tilt” -

why do you assume that the “original” axial tilt was 0?

No, it's the constant axial tilt that gives us our seasons.

Lucky us.

They don’t have any idea what they are saying.

If the tilt were anything different than what it is, life would be impossible. There would be a constant wind blowing from west to east (opposite to the apparent sun motion)

Have you read “Privileged Planet”?

There’s also an abbreviated DVD version.

I'll stick with 26,000 years, if you please, unless you can come up with a good source stating 25,000 years.
