Despite what Sarah Palin might suggest, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack wants to make it crystal clear that the Obama administration has no plans to ban cookies and cakes at schools.
In a call with reporters this afternoon to mark the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, Vilsack lamented that the former Alaska governor has mocked the bill that provides more meals at school for needy kidsincluding dinnerand directs schools to serve healthier meals.
Palin last month brought dozens of cookies to a speech at Plumstead Christian School in suburban Philadelphia and groaned that Pennsylvania was a nanny state run amok, because the state board of education was considering guidelines to limit the number of sweets brought into schools.
The federal legislation, which President Obama is set to sign into law on Monday, would indeed limit bake sales and would apply to all foods sold in schools during regular class hours, including in the cafeteria line, vending machines, and at fundraisers. It doesnt apply to after-school events hosted by schools.
As to Governor Palins comments, you know its the old adage that it would be interesting for folks to read the bill, Vilsack said. The bill doesnt ban cookies, it doesnt ban bake sales. There will be activities after school that wont necessarily be involved in the rubric of this bill.
The White House is heralding the bill as a crucial step toward reaching President Obama's goal of solving the problem of childhood obesity within a generation. The campaign has been the pet project of first lady Michelle Obama. The $4.6 billion bill also increases the federal reimbursement rate by an additional six cents per meal for school lunches for districts that comply with federal nutrition standards, the first substantial rate increase in more than 30 years.
Will the sweets and other baked goods be missed? Vilsack said not to worry. Creative school chefs are already serving appealing alternatives for students. He said he recently enjoyed a brownie made of black beans during a visit to a school in Colorado.
I was told it was very high in protein, Vilsack said.
So the liberal jackwagons are out there passing their Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 while Barry’s wife is trying to put them all on a diet because they’re a bunch of little porkers. I don’t get it.
He may be denying what she’s saying, but the fact is that kids are being disciplined, sent home, suspended for “junk food”.
I know, because I read it here... :)
So maybe being called out, they may back off a bit, its amazing what you can do it you have the nerve to call them out publicly. Wish we had some public servants who weren’t afraid to speak up.
Maybe we need to find some.
A concern to pot shop cookies was that they were not regulated and no one had the authority to check the kitchen or product.
Her flacking for kids losing weight is laughable. Have they no mirrors in the White House? I’m a big guy myself (6 feet tall, 325lbs) but I’m not telling other people how to eat or what to feed their children.

Cookies are ok but you can’t use butter, sugar, bleached flour or chocolate chips. See nothing to worry about.

Actually I consider anything coming from Sarah Palin more logical, more aimed at better improving social issues and also confidence in traditional values.
Unlike the current ideas being dished out by the government that wants control through intimidation, through daily restrictions, through fears of enemies that they deem are against fellow Americans.
Obama and his administration are sheep or cattle herders forcing America through the chutes into the slaughterhouse.
Every day they bring up a proverbial cattle prod forcing public sentiment, angers and opinions in a manufactured direction, just like a cattle drive.
I swear if Washington DC was incinerated by a nuclear blast and almost every person in the line of succession is removed Sarah Palin should be our new POTUS, because the people believe in her, and true beliefs are hard to destroy.
He said he recently enjoyed a brownie made of black beans during a visit to a school in Colorado.
I guess you could call that a "brownie" but I wouldn't claim anyone enjoyed eating it.
LOL
Do people realize what eating beans does? In small spaces?
Black bean brownie? You’ve got to be kidding. This is totally assinine. I think they should cut out all meals at schools. How difficult is it for a parent to fix a PB&J sandwich, add a piece of fruit and a couple of cookies. The school can just add a small carton of milk and the kids are good to go. And look at all the tax dollars we would save. Add two outside recess periods complete with Red Rover and dodge ball and 10 laps around a track after lunch for everybody including teachers. Problem solved.
I remember the days of red rover. Lost count of how many classmates got clothes lined and dropped like a bad habit. Good times.
That sounds...putrid.
Too much starch (turning to fat). Too much indigestible sugars (leading to gaseous emissions). Too crunchy (broken teeth).
This is healthier than what?
Well stated. I agree and thanks very much!
Add a little cheese and some salsa, may not be so bad!
