The Metrodome, The Taxes, and The Vikings.

The Metrodome,

The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome roof collapsed under the weight of 17.1 inches of snow last night. Leaving the sorry Minnesota Vikings without a home stadium for this week's game against the New York Giants team. The stadium is twenty-eight years old, and can hold over 64,000 fans at any given NFL game.

The Taxes,

Public Policy Polling recently found that 49% of Minnesota voters would rather have the Vikings leave for greener pastures, such as California, than to publicly fund a new stadium with taxpayer dollars via increased taxes. With the stadium situation reaching a zenith of epic proportions with yesterday's snow storm, one must wonder whether the voters will change their minds on public funding.

The Jazz, in case you did not know, were originally the New Orleans Jazz. The cultural dissonance between New Orleans and SLC is, well, striking. When I stopped over in SLC on my way to Alaska once, I read story in the local paper about a National Guard unit composed of Utah and Neveda soldiers, known as the Saints and the Sinners. The truly odd thing is that front page had a wire-service story about a soldier from my tiny hometown of Boxborough, Massachusetts, who was running a military salvage yard in Iraq for the Army, and presumably other services.

Another sports franchise name anomaly is the Calgary Flames, who were at one time from Atlanta.

I see no reason for tax payers funding any stadium.

Gillette Stadium is 100% privately paid for as was Foxboro stadium. When the New England Patriots threatened to leave for New Haven, the then Republican Governor (I forget which one) called their bluff.

Somewhere Bud Grant was cheering. Football was meant to be played outdoors.

Amen to that. The best and only game I ever saw in person was in the early 60s, in a snowstorm.. The Vikes beat the Rams 10-3.. the field was covered with oodles of snow.. as were all the seats, fans, everything.. they had to run snow shovels every few minutes across the field to reveal the yard lines and sideline..

The Vikings told the NFL today the dome won’t be ready by next Monday...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Metrodome’s torn roof won’t be repaired in time for the Vikings’ Monday night game with Chicago, stadium officials said Tuesday as the team prepared to use Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium as a backup.
