Could a national sales tax help fix the deficit and gain enough political support to break the stalemate in the nation's capital? Yahoo! reader Brad Sylvester believes it could.

Following a contentious midterm election, some 81 percent of respondents to a recent ABC News/Yahoo! News poll said they expect partisan warfare and inaction to continue over the next two years.

There are plenty of ideas on how to return the government to fiscal responsibility. ...

Many Republicans refuse to consider any tax hikes at all. And many liberal Democrats — who, ironically, may have even more power in the party now that many of their more moderate colleagues have lost their seats — can't stomach the thought of cutting back government services or programs...

Would a national sales tax help bring down the deficit?

I think it more likely that it would give Congress an excuse to spend more.

No. Not by itself.

If you give them more money, they will spend ALL of it... and then some.

Only bringing down the Congress will bring down the deficit
Give them more revenue, they will spend it

Only if we eliminate all personal & corporate income taxes, cap gains, death tax & cut government spending. Totally eliminate the IRS—there’s a huge savings right there.

I’d be all for it, in that case. Stop punishing production over consumption.

How would the tax hike be PAID FOR?

It’s not the government’s money.

The only way to reduce the deficit is to quit spending money and to have a productive economy again. Being taxed to death through yet another tax will do nothing to help.

A national sales tax would hurt the most poorest and underprivileged people in the US. It would hurt them the hardest.

But then most if not all taxes in the US do that.

That is why it is most important to extend all the Bush tax cuts and make them permanent.

Or else do away with the income tax altogether and get rid of the IRS forever.

NO!!!! No new taxes whatsoever will bring down the deficit! If they taxed every earned dollar at 100% it wouldn't bring down the deficit. If they taxed every purchase at 100% it wouldn't bring down the deficit.

The ONLY thing that will bring down the deficit is to reduce spending! As long as the assholes in Washington refuse to cut spending our debt will continue to spiral out of control! The only way to cut spending is to reduce the size and scope of the federal government...we can start with eliminating the EPA, The Dept of Education, The Interior Dept, HUD, on and on.

Exactly.

In 2009 our total national taxation, was equal to the dollar cost of our imports.

The same.

So. Two birds. One stone:

First: Eliminate all income taxes, capital gains, and corporate taxes. ENTIRELY.

Meanwhile enact a no-exceptions, across the board 100% tariff on all imports.

Watch how long it takes, for people to rediscover how to actually make things here.

5 minutes, tops.
