While grocery shopping a few weeks ago, I ran across this sign in the parking lot of a well-known grocery store: Reserved Parking For Low Emissions and Fuel Efficient Hybrid Vehicles. As can be expected, the sign designated a spot near the entrance of the store, right next to the handicapped spots.

Inform the manager that you’ll be shopping at a store that actually wants your business.
Take your business to another store and tell this store WHY!
Sign screams out for a cheap, plated, magnetic “Hybrid” badge one could apply to one’s vehicle’s tailgate, decklid, or hatch, hayna? Or no?
If there is nothing added to the sign that says “fine or tow away”, I’d park my full size truck in the spot and go shopping.
Good place to park my Avalanche...
I’ll go one better.
1996 Dodge Ram, 179,000 miles, scuffs and rust patches, one flooded headlight, 5.2L Magnum V8 slightly out of tune, exhaust with a hole in it.
Gas mileage? 12 city, 17 highway.
I think that’ll be the perfect space for me the next time I see one. And when someone complains, I’ll just explain that it’s an old truck and we’re trying to coax it along a few more years, and it’s a hybrid. It runs half on gas and half on prayers.

You and me both, bud! I relish parking in “specially reserved” spaces that are not legally enforceable! I would be in Nirvana if we had any “eco-only” parking spaces like that around here! I would park in those spaces even if it meant walking an extra distance to a different store!
In the mean time, I would encourage FREEPERS everywhere to clog up as many eco-only spaces as humanly possible!
And what are these designated parking spaces based upon, county or city ordinances? I’d bet not. Sounds more like the store is trying to earn brownie points with corporate HQ, relative to some internal “environmental management” program. I’ll respect the “Expectant Mother” parking spaces, but these? Not so much.
Perfect. That’s a standard north Idaho rig - see ‘em all the time in my neighborhood.
Soccer moms already get a great deal in being able to use HOV lanes even though driving around a bunch of underage kids does nothing to reduce car trips.
Were all of the little tykes going to drive themselves to the soccer match if mom didn't drive them there?
Good place to park my Avalanche...
Our new ‘green’ hanaford has thoses signs.
I park my minivan there every time.
Are these spaces really “not legally enforcable”? They are on private property, after all. I really don’t know, but you’ve piqued my curiosity. Anyone?
Wonder why the author chose to protect the identity of the store.
This one’s seen fifteen years all over the Southeast. You guys out in Idaho dress yours up and take better care of them than I do. :)
Poor thing’s on its last legs but we’re trying to keep it going just a little longer. When I replace it, sadly, I’ll have to get something smaller. It’s just too big for city use, and 12 mpg is killing us at $3.10 a gallon and rising. One of those small “toasters” like a Scion or Kia Soul would work, or a small SUV.
In the meantime, it’s falling apart and rides like a duckboard, but I still love that beast. It’ll be a sad day when I have to give it up. And, hey, I can put a Palin 2012 bumper sticker on it without caring if anybody here in Obamabot country keys it—the paint’s too far gone!

The soccer mom’s line in the headline was simply an annecdote - the point is that it is discriminating against EVERY non-hybrid driving person who wishes to park at that specific establishment
They're probably as enforceable as stop signs within a parking lot.
Are they really going to tow someone who parks there "illegally" or should I say "un-politically-correctly"?
Oops! You can't say 'target.'
