Downsized: Food Container Sizes Reduced, Prices Have Not

It's not your imagination.

Orange juice is not going as far as it used to. Same for toilet paper. Dish soap. And cheese slices.

You are making more trips to the store.

In fact, a Consumer Reports investigation found that while many products have reduced their packaging size; their prices have actually increased.

It how businesses are dealing with higher prices for wholesale food and energy. Instead of raising prices significantly, companies are shrinking the packaging.

They are hoping you do not notice too much.

Consumer Reports (paid subscription required) first noticed the trend when they started hearing complains about higher toilet paper prices despite smaller packaging. Their investigation identified many other products.

Here is a complete rundown of Consumer Reports findings...

Yeah, at Sav-a-Lot they replaced the 5 pound bags of sugar with 64oz bags of sugar. I didn’t notice the price dropping 20%.

Well the added benefit is a reduction in consumption of calories.

We eat too much anyway. /S

My Yuban Coffee was 44oz. and it’s now 33oz. AND the price rose by $2.00. The government elites might fool themselves, but every shopper knows the truth about inflation.

I’ve noticed... especially with ice cream. The containers are much smaller and sale prices use to be two for five dollars and maybe they are now two for six dollars. I’ve also seen pasta 12 oz. instead of 16 oz (1 lb). Spaghetti sauce is also smaller. Just a thought

Campbell's Soup bastards. Even toilet paper has reduced it's width on the roll by about 3/8 of an inch. By doing so, they get one more roll space per parent roll cut.

My wife brought home 3oz cups of yogurt last week. I told her Karen Carpenter and Annie Rexia don't eat at our house! I mean who the hell eats a 3oz cup of yogurt? That's three tablespoons!

If they shrink some of the cereal boxes any more, they’ll be the size of the individual package. Wendy’s has been doing this too for a long time with their sandwiches.

The last time I went shopping I noticed a couple of items had changed from 16 oz to 14. I have been sitting here trying to think of what they were but have a mental block.

yeah, heard Walmart started the universal shrinking of goods forcing the lower payments. That’s how they make 29million an hour.

We like del monte fruit naturals. The container went from 8 oz to 7 but the price stayed the same. Same thing with ice cream. Our local store brags that its carton has 1.75 qt when all the big names are just 1.5. Of course 2 qt used to be the standard.

The downsizing of paper towels was annoying because we have a wall mounted holder. The slight decrease in size caused them to keep falling off the towel holder, which was designed for the old size.

Besides the inflated prices it is actually a headache for recipes now you have to buy 2 of something because of it or use less and alter the taste if you can do that, some things don’t turn out right if you try to skimp. Thanks a lot banana ben bernanke.

I was half-watching some fat show at my parent’s house the other night. The lady helping the fat woman at the grocery store held up one of those small Ben and Jerry/Haagen-daz type containers of icecream and asked her how long one of those would last her. The fat lady looked at her like she was crazy. I guess we are to believe it would take a skinny person a couple of weeks to go through one of those tiny containers.

Just for fun, check out the width of toilet paper. My hubby said that something is wrong with this roll. The roll had as many sheets but was not as wide as usual.

I buy sugar in 50 lb. bags ... they haven’t downsized. Got three of them stored for when TSHTF. It is one of those things that I haven’t figured out how to produce myself.
