Coadjutor Archbishop Gomez condemns workplace immigration raids

The U.S. Catholic bishops decry workplace raids on immigrants, which cause family members to be separated and even bring about “the destruction of the family,” Coadjutor Archbishop Jose Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles told the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement Jan 26.

He said that the bishops believe that immigration is ultimately a humanitarian issue because it impacts “the basic human rights and dignity of the human person.” He added that the church in the U.S. supports the pursuit of comprehensive reform in lieu of enforcement-only measures in dealing with unauthorized immigration.

There are an estimated 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants presently in the U.S. and the bishops, said Archbishop Gomez, do not question the right of the sovereign to enforce immigration laws. But the bishops do not, he said, accept “some of the policies and tactics that our government has employed to meet this responsibility.”

Archbishop Gomez, the former archbishop of San Antonio, in April was named coadjutor of Los Angeles by Pope Benedict XVI. He will automatically become head of the three-county Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the nation’s largest Catholic see, upon Cardinal Roger Mahony’s retirement at 75 on Feb. 27.

As most Catholics in the forum know, Cardinal Archbishop Roger Mahoney is a lousy, dissident leader of the LA Archdiocese. I was hoping that Pope Benedict had appointed a Coadjutor Archbishop who would take his place and straighten the place out of decades of poor leadership.

This is certainly disappointing. Illegal is illegal.

I don’t either, and I’m Catholic.

The bishops just want to fill pews.

Do you think they would like to fill the pews with people who have in most cases a limited education, therefore the church could groom the church member into the type of person they wanted Would grooming a member make their jobs a lot easier and fill the collection plate much quicker ?

Nor I. I’m a Catholic but I’ve no use and nothing but contempt for bishops like this. I’ve never heard one of these men ever decry illegal immigration for the ultimate evil that it is- the trafficking in human beings. This is a form of slavery worse than the Pharaohs and I’ve never heard any cleric denounce it. I only hear them spouting this garbage.

What about our human rights and dignity? Are we just animals to be used? Do we have the right to our own culture, laws, border, language? Do we have the right to keep the hard won fruits of our labor to feed, clothe, shelter and provide medical care we can for our own families? God didn’t mean for us to be slaves and be forced in some cases into poverty in order to support people who break our laws.
I’m sick of illegals having a better standard of living than my husband and I because they don’t pay taxes, get medical free and welfare for their anchor babies, meaning lots of free food. I’ll bet they all get every free school food handout available too,in addition to getting free food from churches, food banks etc. Meanwhile,we economize, cut coupons and go without the medical care we can’t afford.

So aren’t we every bit as human and deserving as these illegal criminals?

The illegals are also blatantly disobeying the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding the moral behavior of immigrants. Immigrants are supposed to respect the laws and customs of the nation to which they emigrate. Illegals just by the fact that they have come illegally have disobeyed Catholic teaching. They are supposed to make every effort to fit into that society.

Just went to the link and read the whole article. It says that Cardinal Mahoney got friendly with Mexican workers when he was young and they worked at his parent’s plant.

Apparently he never troubled himself to find out what low paid, working class Americans endure. These hypocritical pharisees don’t care about American workers, not even the Catholics among us.

This reads like a Criminal Enterprise in the Name of the LORD. Wonder if we commoners can sue this bunch back to the stone age?
