We cannot allow our children and our grandchildren I continue to think this is a losing frame of the argument. I think people hear this and they think that means the problems won't hit until later so don't worry about it.

They want you reliant on your energy, on your food, on your survival, on your health care. Reliant on THEM. This is why we must draw the line now and say, screw you!"Yes, the American people are beginning to understand that it's time to say "screw you" to the federal government. Screw you and all your welfare programs. Shut down Social Security! Shut down your Medicare and Medicaid! Shut down your department of education!
We will all be better off without federal "help" with our lives.

I'm convinced the ONLY way to put a stop to this crap is to have a NATIONWIDE TAX REVOLT.
It would take massive cooperation between citizens and businesses to say NO! No more filing IRS forms, and no more withholding.
We starve the beast, and put em out of business. They can't throw us all in jail.

The better argument is focused on what it means to YOU (not your kids, grandkids, great-grandkids.) And it’s based on the SHORT term. What’s impending. Because that’s all most people care about. They’re like grazing cows. They hear “grandkids” and think, it’s safe now, and go back to chewing cud.

Levin has totally misrepresented the situation.
We won’t shut down the government, the Democrats will.
.
If he wants it shut down he should be encouraging the Dems to do so.
I’m surprised he’s letting his usually clear thinking be manipulated so badly!

What the heck are you talking about?
The Democrats will gladly pass Obama’s horrendous agenda. The Democrats will gladly work with Republicans on “compromise.”
But, there is one and only one way to actually stop Obama. Republicans must shut the government down. Period. What are you missing?
To: unixfox
You shouldn’t tell me what everyone must do. Do it yourself then tell me to follow your example.

.
The Democrats will shut down the government to block the House budget.
.
I’ve no time for anyone too foolish to know that by now.

Mark says its time to draw the line and shut the government down. Mark's monologue on this last night was brilliant. The pubbies should start burning down the media with every single argument they can think of as to why 0bama is wrong and they are right. They should not sut up until the people are on their side and the problem is solved. Nothing is more important than this right now.
But they won't, will they?

You're quite right that the argument shouldn't focus on future generations. Obama’s profligacy is never going to result in a tax burden radically different from the one we have now for the simple reason that the American people won't pay much more than they are paying now. They won't elect representatives who would vote for much higher taxes. If their representatives surprise them and vote for higher taxes anyway, they'll elect replacements. In the mean time, they'll evade the taxes.
Our fiscal burdens aren't leading to astronomical taxes. They're leading to default. It may be an open default or it may be default disguised by high rates of inflation, but default is the only way out. Our government, at all levels, is about to come acropper. The whole system will have to be redesigned to be sustainable.
Levin, and others should stop talking about unrealistic tax rates in the distant future and start talking about the fact that we can't finance the federal government without monetizing the debt.
Another thing bothers me about focusing on the taxes children and grandchildren are likely to pay decades hence. That tactic implicitly accepts the leftist idea that government's income is infinitely elastic. Government doesn't raise what it wants, it raises what free people are willing to give it. You can take more only by shooting people, which is ultimately self-defeating because you can't terrorize people into productivity. Our level of taxation is already probably above the revenue maximizing point. Government can't increase its income to match its expenditures. It has to reduce its expenditures to match its income. Conservatives shouldn't be making any argument that helps obscure that reality.

The government is far too big and intrusive. Parts of it should be shut down and parts of it should be selectively defunded to stop the dumb things they do.
However, the government includes such entities as the military, the Coast Guard and the FAA. There are others. Do we really want those completely shut down and all of their activities halted, even for a week or so, while our politicians try to make political hay as a prelude to getting down to business and actually looking at and doing something useful about what the various governmental entities do, good, bad, necessary and unnecessary?
There would be worse than the personal inconvenience, for example, of all air travel within, to and from the United States being halted: without air traffic control, that would likely happen. There are presumably ongoing military operations and they would have to be halted midstream. How about Coast Guard search and rescue missions?
With the entire government shut down, could there even be votes to get it running again? I don't know but maybe not.
Perhaps we should all just cut off our noses to protest against governmental idiocy.
