I just finished reading Ayn Rands, The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution which is a compilation of articles she wrote in the late sixties and early seventies. In these articles she takes dead aim at the drug induced hippie movement and dissects them with her unique philosophy, objectivism. While she was recounting the debauchery and horrors of Woodstock, I was left wondering; did Americas greatest generation give birth to Americas worst generation?
Tom Brokaw coined the term for those who came of age during the Great Depression and then went on to fight in World War II in his book Americas Greatest Generation. There have been several great generations in Americas relatively short but storied past and arguing which one is the best is not my intention here.
While reading the book I scribbled the following note on my bookmark (I always use a 3×5 card for a bookmarks so I can scribble notes to myself): Americas greatest generation may have prevented the world from speaking German but they gave birth to a generation of lost souls who aim to impose the same kind of tyranny on the world.

When you compare the baby boom generation to the ones that came before it — yes, they were America’s worst. That stated, you can’t indict all boomers, obviously. My father, and many Freepers of Boomer age certainly should not be held accountable for what the boomer politicians did in the 70s, 80s, 90s etc. if they didn’t vote for them, etc.
Nancy Pelosi and Papa Tulane are about as opposite as you can get.
That’s why I made it a point to show that the hippie segment of the boomer generation was a rather small segment of the population.
Worst Generation? Yeah,if you believe the construct fabricated by the Left, the media, and the ‘Hell, No! We won’t go!’ crowd [you know the weasels that wormed their way into government and the educational system]. For another view, check the 58,000 plus names on the Wall in D.C, or take a look at the number of us who served, came back, and got on with our lives [to little thanks and no acclamation].
I don’t normally go to blog pimper’s sites, but I had to read you drivela bout baby boomers. You seem to think all of today’s ills are the cause of boomers. You must be one of those from the Generation Losers. This boomer bashing stuff really gets me.
There are good boomers and bad boomers. The bad boomers grew up to become Democrats.
And that is precisely why the Republican party has two things they must do:
First, they must choose someone who is a genuine conservative, not merely someone who has collected enough chits, or has enough money to buy the nomination. The nominee must be a fighter, courageous and unafraid of the heat of battle because it will be intense and intensely personal. They must be someone who understands the issues on a deep level. They must be able to articulate those issues and the proposed solutions, not given to platitudes and catch phrases.
To be candid, I have not seen that person emerge yet. The nomination process needs to be intense, a fire that forges and reveals the eventual candidate's true strength. I genuinely hope that kind of person is in the race but despite the passion of current supporters, no one has yet truly separated themselves from the pack.
Second, once the nomination is settled, conservatives and right-leaning people must close ranks behind that person. Whining, petty dissension and withholding of support simply because the nominee does not fulfill each and every ideological litmus test on each and every issue will only serve to weaken the party and the conservative movement as a whole. If you get 85% or 90% of your wish list, then shut up, work to get them elected and keep the pressure up through other means, especially through the Congress. Any other alternative ill-conceived and Quixotic third parties or simply staying home in protest will guarantee four more years of Obama. Four more years of implementing his anti-American agenda and this time, without the constraint of concern over re-election. If he is re-elected he will consider himself answerable to the people even less than he does now and I, for one, shudder to think how that will play out.
This will be an election that determines whether the America envisioned by our founders will continue or whether America will try to duplicate the failures of every socialist, communist and totalitarian experiment that humanity has attempted. In many ways the life of the Republic is determined by every election. This time, without real change, the condition of the patient may be terminal.
I agree that my generation are spoiled brats. But I will not be blamed for the Sexual Revolution. That credit belongs to our parents that produced all of us Boomers.
Why do I suspect that most of the people doing this "boomer bashing" are still living in their parent's basements?
Your rant is a fail.
All pseudo-profundity aside, the secret to the ‘60s is simply that half the US population came to be under the age of 25.
Boomers have not, as you claim, been running the country for the past few decades. Neither Nancy Pelosi nor Harry Reid, for instance, are boomers.
I do not know whether the History channel will repeat their recently aired biography of the counterculture, simply called, “Hippies,” but, it was very interesting. The Revolution began in earnest with the widespread use of LSD, with the uninhibited behavior lasting until the Charles Manson murders. You can look around today in our public life and see that some of the ring leaders are now in power over us. So, in my view the most despicable young generation succeeded in stealing everything their elders had sacrificed for over many generations. Who knows though..They could be the very ones to reap the whirlwind they created before all this is over.
'Boomers' elected Ronald Reagan. 'Xers' elected Barak Obama.
Thank God they came along to correct the failure that was the 'Boomer' generation. I know that I sleep better at night.
Good point!
WELL SAID “There are good boomers and bad boomers. The bad boomers grew up to become Democrats.”
I have never voted for a Liberal/Democrat! I am a Boomer and I am VERY Conservative and always have been. I was not at Woodstock! I was busy in those years working and going to school!
But the idea that boomers ruined America is kind of dumb when FDR and LBJ were not boomers.
