The Coupon Whisperer: "Extreme Couponing"---Episodes 1 & 2
The Coupon Whisperer ^ | April 6, 2011 | PJ-Comix

The first two episodes of "Extreme Couponing" aired this evening on TLC. Many similarities with the original show which aired in December although I noticed some new bits of interesting information. Specifically "money maker" deals or "making money" was alluded to. For those of you new to couponing that means when you have a coupon so good that it is worth more than the product you are buying. The amount of "overage" aka "moneymaker" aka "mm" is applied toward your other products. That is why you saw the people on today's show able to buy meat, milk, etc. and end up owing hardly anything.

One criticism I do have of the show is that for dramatic purposes the people bought HUGE amounts of items on each shopping trip. The Coupon Whisperer prefers not to do that for two reasons:

Don't be shy. What were YOUR thoughts on tonights episodes of "Extreme Couponing?"

BTW, my Ken's Marinade coupons are hot to trot and starting tomorrow The Coupon Whisperer will score several dozen FREE bottles. I had just run out of my marinade stockpile so this is like the cavalry arriving in the nick of time. Hopefully I can build up a 6 month stockpile.

What stores let you do this? I’ve had cashiers throw coupons back at me when I’ve only had 2 of them.

I’ve taped the show and will watch it later tonight. It looks interesting and I’d like to know how they were able to do that.

The first couple were very strange. I’m a couponer and I’m a stockpiler, so I get the idea behind stockpiling. But just what the heck are they doing with all that mustard? I could see clearing the shelf if it was a MM, but just because it’s $.39? Like it’ll never be on sale again? They’d have to pay ME to take that much. Then, she was complaining about being over what she wanted to pay. Well, how’s about putting back some of the $30 you just spent on ‘cheap’ mustard! Sheesh...

Paul and Tiffany are great. I know their websites well. They did a real shopping trip and made things work for them.

What was with the chick PAYING $.69 a piece for all that Maalox (You know, the stuff that they were paying people to take out of stores by the truckload the entire time that $5/1 coupon was valid!) and thinking that was a good deal? Every real couponer in the world now knows that she’s a sucker.

I think the actual show is going to have the opposite effect from the pilot: I think it’s going to keep people away from couponing rather than make them more curious. I also noted the lack of any real information to help people. There was much more info in the pilot.

I’ll still watch it, but I found most of them to be pretty amateurish couponers.

Strangely, I actually kind of get what that slimy liberal reviewer wrote about it now that I’ve watched it. Much of the show showed the darker side of couponing where people are just being gluttonous. Meanwhile, in the real world, the overwhelming majority of REAL couponers are just about the most generous people you could ever hope to meet.

Walmart does it. I got a $77 tab down to $9 today with price matching and coupons. If you’re organized and polite, they’re very nice about it and always in awe of the savings.

I got $110 down to $40 at CVS the other day, and got back $25 EBs. Thanks to all for the great links you’ve provided me.

My big score last week was Arrowhead sparkling water for 9 cents a bottle. We drink gallons of the stuff in the summer. :)

Yeah, that was a lot of mustard. I usually never have more than a couple on hand. OTOH, I am definitely planning on stocking up bigtime this coming week on Ken's Marinade. I go thru a couple bottles per week. So a stockpile of 50 would last me about 6 months until their next sale.

Tomorrow we are visiting the in-laws so taking several large Air Wick Freshmatic Kits as gift items.

I noted the Maalox deal as well. She could’ve gone to Target and been paid to take it out of the store...or CVS....or Wags, and on and on. I cannot imagine why she was actually PAYING for it!

I can’t remember which couple it was that was purchasing Cereal and the narrator was saying that they’d get back a full rebate on each box. I’m not sure how that’s possible since I’ve rarely seen a rebate that’s allowed to be done more than once per household. There ARE a few that I’ve seen, but I don’t recall any for cereal.

The deal with the mustard I found odd as well...lol! I NEVER actually PAY for mustard.

I think it’s an interesting show, but I also see how it could make people not familiar with couponing have a negative opinion of those of us who use them.

That’s awesome! Congrats!

It’ll taste even better this summer knowing how little you paid!

Speaking of rebates, have you seen the $10 gift card for 10 Kellogg’s UPCs offer? Limit of FIVE per household!

WOW, no I haven’t seen that! What’s the deal with that one? I have been a bit out of touch in the past few weeks. I am recently disabled and dealing with pain has had me missing out on quite a few deals. Starting tomorrow I’m getting back in the “coupon saddle” and forcing myself to get organized and get out there!

I like your take on this show. My wife and I watched it and we both were thinking the same things you just stated - WHY do you need to take that much mustard and Malox (I guess after you eat all that mustard, you will need the Malox)?!? LOL!

Really though, my first thought was these people are HOARDERS! I understand buying in bulk when it is on sale, and I understand having plenty for when times are tough, but these seemed a little “over-the-top” for me.

And then lastly, like you stated, very few real “useable” information/tips were given out in these shows. We will keep watching to see if it gets better.
