The National Rifle Association has been holding its annual meeting in Pittsburgh for the past few days, heralded with billboards promising "acres of guns and gear."
Here's a billboard you didn't see, but would have if the group was honest about its mission to paint even the most sensible gun laws as a step toward tyranny: "The NRA: Because if Richard Poplawski can't have an arsenal, neither can you."
Mr. Poplawski, of course, was one of those "law-abiding" citizens whose right to bear arms the NRA claims to be protecting. Unfortunately, he ceased to be law abiding on April 4, 2009, the date on which he's accused of gunning down three Pittsburgh police officers in Stanton Heights after they answered his mother's call about a dispute she was having with him.
Mr. Poplawski, then 22, didn't have one gun that day. He had several, including an AK-47 assault-style rifle and enough ammunition to hold off police for four hours, putting at risk the other officers who tried to save their fallen comrades, not to mention the entire neighborhood. Soon he'll be standing trial for killing officers Eric Kelly, 41, Stephen Mayhle, 29, and Paul Sciullo III, 37. The prosecution is seeking the death penalty.
It appears that Mr. Poplawski got his weapons legally. Somehow I doubt that's any comfort to the widows and children of these three officers, since their loved ones would be just as dead either way.....

It is. Clearly the author feels empowered to take away our rights anytime she wants to. Well miss you don't get to take away our rights at your whim.
2nd Amendment is for everyone...
[GASP!] I believe that these comments are tantamount to yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater! These type of comments could stampede the more emotionally driven types to demand deprivation of rights guarenteed by the 2nd amendment.
Therefore, this paper must be fined and/or shutdown!
The NRA convention is probably the safest place in town.
Poplawski broke the law. Now he will pay.
The Obama administartion is sending arms to the drug cartels.
Dan Rather and CBS news broadcast a fabricated story about President Bush and his National Guard Service.
We need common sense media control laws!!!!!!
Turn it around on them!
Read the article and see the lies!
Here is the big one:
“...because of the loophole that exempts gun show dealers from doing background checks...”
In Pennsylvania, dealers must do background checks at gun shows, so Sally Kalson is a LIAR!!!
The NRA show was so large that if I'd have bought everything I wanted, I'd have had to sell my house and car for extra cash/
In Pennsylvania, we have NICS (National Instant Check System).
The dealer calls an 800 number, provides the driver license number and social security number of the buyer and a worker enters those into the computer system. An approval number is given (like a credit card authorization) that is put on the state form.
It is that easy and takes no more than 3 minutes.
So, the author is a LIAR
Come and get them!
Sally Kalson epitomizes the corrosive and virulent forces of tyranny that are so sadly common in today’s media. Her commentary is journalistic malpractice and ironic abuse of the First Amendment protections for a Free Press. She intentionally smears innocent people, confuses her readers with inaccurate statements, and then blatantly lies outright in pursuit of her agenda.
Kalson uses the murder of three police officers as a vehicle for an attack on the Second Amendment and all those who consider it a bulwark of freedom. The first instance of her calumny is that old Soviet chestnut “disinformation.” She rails against the NRA national convention in Pittsburgh and particularly its accompanying gun show, for its contribution to the so-called “gun show loophole” in gun control legislation, even though no such exception exists in the way Kalson alleges. Her more sinister propagandizing uses the murderer, Richard Poplawski, to demonize such gun shows even though he did not procure his weapon from such an exhibition. She goes on to blame the specific rifle she claims he used, an “AK-47” and insinuates that its capability “could spray an entire crowd with bullets at one touch.” Both claims are false, as the rifle she cites is an automatic firearm. Ms Kalson knows that automatic weapons have been severely restricted since the 1920s. Lying and sowing confusion suits her purpose, so...what the heck?
Next, Kalson juxtaposes the name of Glenn Beck, a conservative, with a reference to “Mein Kampf”, in a fake paen to free speech for liberals. The intent is not to promote free speech, but rather defame Mr. Beck and all who agree with him. That’s number two on the totalitarian hit parade: “scapegoating.” The implication: “You knuckle-dragging, tea bagging, NRA members, who listen to conservative commentary, better put down Mein Kampf for a minute before your paranoid delusions cause you to snatch up your Kalashnikovs and machine gun some cops.”
Lastly, she composes an amateurish jibe at Donald Trump because he had the temerity to ask the President for valid I.D. How dare a mere commoner ask his majesty for such a thing? This final point reveals the sick hubris behind the whole of Kalson’s ilk. “Real journalists” like her and the political leftists they admire are the smartest people in every room. We peasants ought to follow their vanguard, preferably in silence. It clearly suggests that the “mass media loophole” is not preventing elitists and socialistic tyrants from misusing the levers of information. They “spray” their lies everywhere, damaging the republic with a touch of a keypad. The founders could never have imagined that the first amendment could be so abused by Twitter, Blackberries, and laptops, or they surely would have never written it. Ms. Kalson wants freedom for “she” but not for “thee”. And, just for the record, I prefer Poor Richard to Mein Kampf and the precision of an M1A to “spraying” an AK-47.
It’s not a loophole when the law was specifically crafted. Instead, it’s legislative creep when the law is expanded to include things not originally intended to be covered.
And the millions of us whose defensive use of firearms have prevented murders, rapes, and thefts? What are we? Beneath this disgusting drones notices?
A sure sign the “law” never should have existed in the first place.
Here is an e-mail I just sent Ms Kalson:
Ms Kalson:
First, in Pennsylvania, there is no so-called gunshow loophole. We have the NICS (National Instant Check System) where the firearm dealer calls an 800 number, provides the PA State Police with the buyer’s driver license number and social security number. The PA State Police puts these into the computer system and the person is either approved or denied and a transaction number is provided to the dealer and filled into the purchase form. This is required at all gun shows in Pennsylvania.
Second, if you wish to rail against someone, it should be the Obama Administration, BATFE, Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department for Project Gunrunner.
CBS News has reported extensively on this growing scandal where dealers were forced by the BATFE to sell thousands of firearms to Mexican gun runners. They allowed those firearms to pass into Mexico and out of their control. One firearm was found at the scene where a US Border Patrol Agent, Brian Terry, was murdered.
Potentially, hundreds of Mexican citizens, officials and US citizens and officals have been murdered with weapons that were knowingly allowed to “walk” across the border.
You can search “CBS Project Gunrunner” to see the investigation so far. Much has been admitted, some whistleblowers came forward, but the most transparent administration ever continues to stonewall the media and congressional investigators.
Focus your hatred of firearms on corrupt government officals rather than honest dealers who want to earn a living.
Thank you,
Erik Latranyi
Call your elected officials and demand a 4473 style background check for ALL voters. If you vote, you must complete the form and pass the background check every time you vote. After all, if it’s good enough for the 2nd Amendment it should be good enough for the others.
As has been said, turn it around on these people.
There’s simply no point in arguing with those suffering from mental deficiency.
The poor woman needs to be pitied for her condition.
