There really is no hacking involved. You load the free software on an SD card and turn it on. If you don't want to use it any more, you just remove the SD card CHDK on it. I had referenced CHDK in a previous post to the OP.

I like getting the most bang for my buck, and I haven't found anything I can't do with CHDK that I could do on a more expensive camera, including high-speed photography.

I'm not one of those people who take pride in how much I spent on something and wear it as a sign of my superiority.
