"What do we do?"

What we must do, if liberty is to survive, is to rediscover the ideas of liberty. The next step is to teach them to our children and to hold our elected representatives to them.

A good starting point.

We have devolved into what our Framers feared, a land of competing self interests encumbered neither by the paper limits in our Constitution nor self control, ie virtue.

In their system, only the House of Reps was to reflect popular will. We now have three term Congressmen masquerading as Senators and are quickly moving toward popular election of the President.

At the same time, “law” increasingly means the diktats of unelected bureaucrats and judges to whom our legislators happily punt real power. We are rapidly falling into the worst of all possible systems, democratic tyranny.

Throughout history, the greatest nations were born Stoic and died Epicurean. We are not immune.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits....” - - - - Alexis de Tocqueville - ‘Democracy in America’ - published in 1835
