The 18 Senators Who Approve Breaking The Internet To Protect Hollywood

from the not-cool dept

Last fall, we noted that the Senate Judiciary Committee had unanimously voted to approve COICA, a bill for censoring the internet as a favor to the entertainment industry. Thankfully, Senator Ron Wyden stepped up and blocked COICA from progressing. This year, COICA has been replaced by the PROTECT IP Act, which fixes some of the problems of COICA, but introduces significant other problems as well. A wide cross section of people who actually understand technology and innovation have come out against PROTECT IP as written -- including librarians, human rights groups, public interest groups (pdf) and various technology groups (pdf), including CEA, CCIA and NetCoalition. Most significantly, a group of internet/DNS specialists have made a strong case that this would break the internet in significant ways:

Exceprt List follows

This morning the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to move forward with PROTECT IP as is. It seems only fair to once again name the Senators who just voted (with a voice vote) to break the internet. Here's your list of technologically ignorant lawmakers of the day:

Orrin Hatch fancies himself as a composer.
Actually has had a small but steady stream of income from that over the years.
That was the specific reason he stated as he supported blowing up your PC in 2003, to make sure you paid for your music downloads.

He creates something, you must pay, to enforce his income , you lose the 1st Amendment and the ability to critique his work, and he demands compliance through the barrel of a gun.

Nice guy, hope he enjoys retirement and writes plenty more songs.

These guys don’t give a damn about unintended consequences. As far as I’m concerned, they’re striving for it.

What’s going on (again) with Jeff Sessions? The other Repukes don’t surprise me.

And what is the average age of these Senators? Why are clueless troglodytes governing modern tech?

Hatch, Grahamnesty, and Cornyn have long been useful idiots for the left. But what is with Coburn, Lee, and Sessions?

The government (at all levels) has no business touching the internet, healthcare, and a variety of other things it has stuck its nose into in recent years. Leave it alone, Senators or you will be replaced by somebody who has a clue.

Only if the Robinsons decide to infringe on someone’s copyright or traffic in counterfeit goods. That is the tag they slap on websites selling faux Gucci bags and Rolexes.

You're absolutely and completely totally wrong. The slap that on domain names that they seize for percieved violations of copyright law. Most of the domains that have been seized up until this point didn't even host any content. They just contained links to content. FR has been routinely targeted for legal action under the very same theories that these sights have been seized.

They should not get the benefit of a publicly-funded copyright police.

If you think about it, they're effectively making us pay for their investigators and lawyers. For millions in lobbying money, they've received hundreds of millions in free copyright enforcement. Money well-spent.

The internet isn’t dangerous.

Telcos are dangerous.

Leftists and marxists of all stripes - the most dangerous of all. Note that this bill was authored by a leftist: Leahy.

PROTECTIP is being regarded as COICA reincarnated, and those saying that are probably right.

Coupled with net neutrality regulations, this would provide a lot of the teeth that the FCC and the administration desperately wish to have in place - and to manipulate - on content that they deem unneutral.
