"Well, if living in the 18th Century works for you, I won't gainsay your decisions.

I like things like electricity, computers (what are you posting with?), refrigeration, air conditioning, automobiles, airplanes, etc.
"

Now that's helplessness.

"And you think I haven't studied up on those tactics? And won't use them with my overwhelming force of greedy and borderline insane soldiers, armed to the teeth with the provisions we took from the nearby military bases while you were hunkering down planting seeds? One Hellfire from my stolen drones and your compound is toast. You think I can't get geeks to join when I tell them they will rule the world and have all the chicks they want?"

Do you play with the phone, when mom's not looking, too?

"A hatchet & ax would be worth their weigh in either metal when gas is unavailable."

Only city folks with little knowledge of low technologies try to use those tools for cutting firewood. People who have done much of that kind of work use far better hand tools, if chain saws aren't available or fueled.

"Check out what happened to the middle class in Argentina over the last decade. It wasn’t a cholo riot my friend."

Riots were the final force behind the repudiation of debt there, although it doesn't have to be that way here. It's up to the parasites as to how they want to do it.

I am not sure how it would develop. Gold and silver would find their own value in time. You are correct tools would be valuable. That said go to any yard sale and about everyone has some tools and some other useful things meaning that most every household has some basics. Mad Max, not necessarily but I do think areas protected by a group of people banded together with a local leader is possible. If the SHTF event is a mass kill off of humans then things would develop in strange ways. Like I said you have anything you want to trade? Salt, sugar, TP, toothpaste on and on.

Have you seen the movie “The Book of Eli”? Water was the scarce commodity. That puts a whole different spin on what ever happens. I just know that Federal Reserve Notes will not be worth $hit. Read about Argentina. Scary stuff.

Lehman’s is an Amish supply house of sorts. They have a terrific catalog with all kinds of stuff preppers would like.

Thank you. Harbor Freight also has an industrial type sewing machine.

Yes, it’s probably Chinese. But our error-prone, importing, genocidal, outsourcing, off-shoring leadership will depose themselves by their own policies, while we prepare more quickly and buy a little more time to do so.

Some of us are planning to use foreign machines to make custom parts to build American machines. ;-)

It’s true. All we have to do is wait you out. You have to come out sometime.

The key to survivability is mobility.Stocking up a bunch of stuff just means I get a bunch of stuff when you move on or eat a sniper round.

IIRC, the caretaker Washington left in charge of Mount Vernon bought protection for the estate by giving goods to the British. Washington was not pleased.

Heh. I'm out most of the time, working. Does "we" have to do with some sort of robbery attempt? [Little humor there.]

I'm glad that I don't live in the east or near any coast. Canning garden produce and storing it is safe enough here. Same with potatoes in the root cellar. And BTW, in some situations, it can be more dangerous for law-abiding folks to leave their homes--especially during natural or unnatural disasters. ...going back to work now, outside, where's it's quiet. ;-)

Here are some of the more serious dangers facing most Americans, IMO.

Geithner warns Congress on need for debt boost, extends default deadline

Earth may be headed into a mini Ice Age within a decade

(with quotes from the National Solar Observatory and NASA)

But for those of us preparing for those kinds of events (and not so much for Helter Skelter) without big government spending and mismanagement, they’ll mean more peace, quiet and prosperity.

Planted in mid-August to September, plants such as kale, the lettuces, chards, turnips, beets, collards, will germinate nicely and grow into winter without bolting, or needing water once the rains come. I consider SF a lot of things, but not PNW. I’ll bet there are hippies turned entrepreneurs that specialize in seeds for the region. Should be a mild enough climate for this practice. Would I depend on the greens? Probably not a good idea, but they supplement fish, fowl and game. And you will have a flourishing green garden when others are planting in the spring...which you should also do. Possible to continue the cycle with plants that go to seed. Also, peas are cold hardy.
