'Unhealthy' corn dogs, chicken nuggets out, sushi in at L.A. schools

The L.A. school board's decision to stop serving flavored milks on campuses is just the beginning.

A menu overhaul is underway that will mean fewer meals that resemble fast food and more vegetarian offerings. Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce and California sushi rolls, along with many ethnic foods, are to be added.

Corn dogs, chicken nuggets and other breaded items are out, said Dennis Barrett, food services director.

Megan Bomba, a project coordinator with Occidental College's Urban and Environmental Policy Institute, agreed with the move, saying "the meal needs to be better, not [that] we need to keep chocolate milk" to attract students to the cafeteria, she said.

The menu proposed for fall sounds more appealing and sophisticated, she added.

The district banned sodas on campuses in 2004, starting a trend followed by the state as well as districts across the country. Later that year, the school board passed a motion to ban the sale of junk food during the school day...

California will start serving kids bottom-quality elementary school cafeteria sushi prepared by illegal alien lunch ladies.

Hey, what could go wrong?

None except the most expensive private school is going to be able to serve sushi safely.

<< I’d guess the sushi served will be vegetarian, rather than types involving raw fish. >>

They mentioned California Rolls which typcially contain cooked crab meat, but there is a vegetarian look-a-like for crab meat that can be used (and it’s cheaper).

I love ceviche. But I buy the fish from a place I trust and make it myself. And I enjoy sushi, too, again in a trustworthy restaurant, and where I live there are some excellent sushi places. But think about quality control and guaranteeing the health of 700,000 students on sushi day in a public school system that big, which contracts for its food suppliers to a large extent based on price. I would not let my children eat raw fish at a public school.

I wonder how crappy the sushi will end up being. Quality really matters for raw meat like sushi.

California Rolls are not sushi. They are imitation crab sticks, cucumber, avocado, seaweed paper, rice and sesame seeds.

They are not good quality raw fish.

Minor quibble. :-)

Many years ago I worked for a big Jacksonville dairy hauling milk to all the Putnam County Florida schools. The kids had no other beverage choice, had to put a half pint of milk on their tray as they walked through the line, but many of them dumped the milk in the trash as they left.

It makes more sense to offer some choices.

I don’t let me kids be educated in a public school let alone eat anything in a public school. I totally agree there is no way they could deliver a safe good tasting product.

I went to public schools back in ancient times, and we always had appetizing and healthy lunches

Same here. The lunch ladies would serve us good home cookin'. Real chicken, no mystery meat. Homemade yeast rolls that you could smell all over the campus - yummmmm! That was back during government free butter, cheese, and peanut butter. Yep, back in the good ol' days when no one was allergic from peanuts. They'd get creative to turn pb into something new every day - one day pb and apples, next cookies, next mixed with honey and bananas, half a pbj sandwich, etc.

Considering that sushi may be radioactive for the next 30 years, I might stick with the nuggets.

Public school prepared sushi? This is not going to end well....

Sushi scares - infectious diseases associated with eating sushi or raw fish

Snips:

Human infection by Anisakis simplex (herring worm) and other nematodes, or roundworms, is caused by eating certain raw or undercooked fish. Ingestion of the worm can result in severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting within hours of ingestion and has been misdiagnosed as appendicitis or other stomach diseases. If the worms don’t get coughed up or vomited out, they can burrow into the walls of your intestines and cause a localized immune response.

Another Vibrio species, Vibrio vulnificus, has been found in oysters, clams, and crab. In healthy people, ingestion of this microbe can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, but in people with liver disease or weakened immune systems, the microbe can enter the bloodstream, causing the life-threatening condition of septicemia.

All about sushi worms

If sushi worms are present in sashimi – those tasty raw bits of fish flesh – they may even be visible to the naked eye. Some individuals have reported a tickle in the throat as the worms begin their passage. In many cases, the sushi worms will continue uneventfully through the stomach and exit through the intestinal tract. They will likely die along the way. Milder to severe symptoms may begin occurring in two hours following a meal, but may become present up to two weeks later. This condition is known as anisakiasis. Pain in the abdominal area may occur as well as nausea and vomiting, followed by intestinal distress (often likened to Crohn’s disease). In extreme cases, exploratory procedures and surgery are required to remove the sushi worm.

Parochial schools. Some people home school but the Church operates some first rate schools where we live and there was never any question.

Who’s paying for this? We are.
Most of the kids in the LAUSD are illegal aliens or anchor babies and get free breakfast and lunch.
